The biography of Gangkar Rinpoche is the story of a Tibetan lama from Minyak whose openness in teaching was influential in bringing Tibetan Buddhism to the West. His students introduced the songs of Milarepa to western audiences, established Tibetology in China, and continue his legacy of teaching and disseminating Tibetan culture. Gangkar Rinpoche re-established centers of learning in Minyak in the 1930s, with special teachings given at Gangkar monastery on the slopes of Gonga Shan. Included is Gangkar Rinpoche’s pilgrimage guide to this sacred mountain in western Sichuan.

Born in 1922 near "Bo Gangs dkar mountain in the lower part of Minyag ringmo, Minyag Gonpo became a monk when he was five. He studied with and served Gangkar Rinpoche uninterruptedly for 28 years and maintained a connection as spiritual friend for an additional ten years. He is recognized as a poet and the most talented of Gankar Rinpoche's students. As an editor and writer at the National Minorities Library in Beijing, he works with rare Tibetan texts. He also teaches and serves as advisor for Tibetan studies publications. He is the author of Short Biographies of Tibetan Masters.
