Abhidhamma for the Beginner By: Baptist

No one would deny that the Abhidhamma is a difficult subject to study, for it is the quintessence of the Buddhas teachings, and requires deep insight and understanding into the fundamental principles of Buddhism. I have, however, always felt that the subject could be made simple. I was very glad, therefore, surprised indeed, to find that with deep insight, Mr. Baptist had actually succeeded in presenting the main elements of the Abhidhamma in the language of the man-in-the-street. Anyone with average intelligence should be able to profit by this book considerably. To my knowledge, no book has yet appeared on so deep a subject in so simple a language. Mr. Baptist is to be congratulated on his achievement. Nay, I would go further and suggest that this book should now be translated into Sinhalese that it may reach a wider circle of students, and be made the basis of future Abhidhamma studies to beginners.

Abhidhamma Studies: Buddhist Exploration of Consciousness and Time By: Thera, Nyanaponika
|
|
Our Price: $16.95 Members Price: $15.26
|
|
|

The Abhidhamma, the third great division of early Buddhist teaching, expounds a revolutionary system of philosophical psychology rooted in the twin Buddhist insights of selflessness and dependent origination. In keeping with the liberative thrust of early Buddhism this system organizes the entire spectrum of human consciousness. It maps out with remarkable rigor and precision, the inner landscape of the mind to be crossed through the practical work of Buddhist meditation. In this groundbreaking book Venerable Nyanaponika Thera penetrates the formidable face of the Abhidhamma and makes its principles intelligible to the thoughtful reader of today. Basing his approach on the detailed list of mental factors that the Abhidhamma uses as a guide to psychological analysis he launches into bold explorations of the multiple dimensions of conditionality the nature of consciousness the temporality of experience and the psychological springs of spiritual transformation. Innovative and rich in insights this book does not merely open up new avenues in the academic study of early Buddhism-it also demonstrates the continuing relevance of Buddhist thought to our most astute contemporary efforts to understand the elusive yet intimate nature of the mind.

Here in this book it has been taken into consideration of their ethical behaviour, mental attitude - like latent factors, belief, and other difiling and purifying factors connected with the worldly and spiritual life. A translation of Vasubandhu's Abhidharma Kosa Bhasyam. The Sanskrit word "Abhidharma" means the systematic philosophy of Buddhism. From the time of the Buddha onward, the Buddha's disciples, and many later generations of his followers studied, analyzed, and re-classified the teachings of the Buddha, and in the process created a unique field of study which has come to be known as the Abhidharma. Only a small but important portion of Abhidharma literature has been preserved in its original Sanskrit: Vasubandhu's Abhidharmakosabhasyam, and its commentary, Yasomitra's Vyakhya

The Compendium Of The Higher Teaching (Philosophy) The Abhidharmasamuccaya is an extremely important text of Mahayana Abhidharma. It contains nearly all the main teachings of the Mahayana and can be considered as the summary of all the works by Asanga. The method of treatment of the subjects in this work is the same as the traditional method found in the texts of the Pali Abhidhamma which preceded it by several centuries, such as the Dhammasangani, Vibhanga and Dhatukatha: posing a question and answering it.

Abhidharmasamuccaya By: Traleg Rinpoche

|

We will be exploring the Abhidharmasamuccaya, a text that belongs to the later development of Buddhism. Early Buddhism is known as Theravadin or Hinayana Buddhism. Later Buddhism is known as Mahayana Buddhism. It has two schools: Madhyamika, the school of the middle way, and Yogacara, the practitioners of yoga. Yoga, in this case, has very little to do with physical dexterity, with how you can twist your arms or fiddle your toes. It is very much related with learning how to meditate properly and relate to one's own mind, with trying to understand the sort of mental states we go through in meditation and so on. The Abhidharmasamuccaya presents that kind of overall structure, in the fullest sense.

The Abhidhamma is the Buddhist analysis of mind and mental processes, a wide-ranging systemization of the Buddha’s teaching that combnes philosophy, psychology, and ethics into a unique and remarkable synthesis. The Buddhist monks and scholars of southern Asia hold the Abhidhamma in the highest regard, pursuing its study with great diligence. For 800 years, a little treatise in the Pali language called the Abhidhammattha Sangaha (Manual of Abhidhamma) has served as the key to open this treasure store of Buddhist wisdom. In this work, the author, Acariya Anurudda, concisely surveys the central topics of Abhidhamma: states of consciousness and mental factors, the functions and processes of the mind, the material world, dependent arising, the methods and stages of meditation.

One of the cental concepts in Buddhism is the idea of kamma. Although the importance of karma in Buddhist thought is regularly recognized, the question remains whether the Buddhist understnading of the principal of karma has been inalterabley fixed, or whether it has undergone a rocess of development and modification during the course of Buddhist history. if, indeed, the Buddhist understand of karma has not been static, what kinds of development has it undergone? It is to these questions that this study addresses itself.

Five Aggregates: Understanding Theravada Psychology and Soteriology By: Mathieu Boisvert
|
|
Our Price: $14.00 Members Price: $12.60
|
|
|

In this study Mathieu Boisvert presents a detailed analysis of the
five aggregates (pancakkhandha) and establishes how the Theravada
tradition views their interaction. He clarifies the fundamentals of
Buddhist psychology by providing a rigorous examination of the nature
and interrelation of each of the aggregates and by establishing, for
the first time, how the function of each of these aggregates chains
beings to the cycle of birth, death and rebirth - the theory of
dependent origination (paticcasamuppada). Boisvert contends that
without a thorough understanding of the five aggregates, we cannot
grasp the liberation process at work within the individual, who is,
after all, simply an amalgam of the five aggregates.
The Five Aggregates
represents an important and original contribution to Buddhist studies
and will be of great interest to all scholars and students of Buddhism.
