"The Arts of Contemplative Care" collects together in one volume the voices of pioneers in the widening field of "Contemplative Care"--an exciting new domain of vocational Buddhism informed by practices of compassion and meditation. This collection captures the richness and diverse practices of socially engaged Buddhism within the context of the fields of chaplaincy and ministry that until recently were dominated primarily by Judeo-Christian faith-traditionsEach of the essays is first-person, vividly showing days-in-the-life of a chaplain or pastoral worker and also presenting a distillation of lesson's learned and wisdom gained--and each of the sections in this volume focuses on the specific challenges present and skills needed in the different venues in which a chaplain might work: with the terminally ill and actively dying (and their families) in hospice; amid the ever changing hectic urgency of a hospital; with college students struggling to discover themselves and make meaning with their lives; helping the "low-density" populations of non-Christian religious people in the military keep peace within themselves and on the war-front; and with prisoners who's daily life is a hell realm many of us can't even imagine. This book also includes a thoughtful recommended reading list, and pointers to a variety of resources.

"Lama Lodo presents a wealth of heretofore untranslated material.... This modest but carefully produced book is an extension of and complement to the Tibetan book of the Dead. "Bardo Teachings is remarkable because it reveals a significant portion of the secret tantric path. This is genuine tantra-not a potpourri of Western self-help instructions and fragments of Eastern thought. "Bardo Teachings is. . .a teaching on how to traverse the stages of death without fear. It is as true a guide to tantric Buddhism's view of life and death as can be found in print." San Francisco Chronicle.

When Zen teacher Joan Halifax first started working with the dying, it didn't come easily or naturally for her. "Working so closely with death often scared me," she reports. "I was afraid I might get what the dying person had. When I recognized, however, that I already have what dying people havemortalityI stopped being afraid of catching it." This insight has been foundational in her nearly forty years of working with people facing the dying process. Understanding that the category of "the dying" ultimately includes all of us, Joan makes no distinction in her teaching, whether it's addressed to those who happen to be dying right now or to those who happen to be their caregivers. Bringing mindfulness to the process is the key in either situation. The Buddhist wisdom she presents for approaching the end of life has proven beneficial for people of all religious backgrounds, as is demonstrated in the often deeply moving stories she recounts of people she has worked with. She also provides a wealth of practical advice for caregiving, and guided meditations aimed at helping readers to face death without fear, to develop a commitment to helping others, and to transform suffering and resistance into courage.

Since its beginning, Buddhism has been intimately concerned with confronting and understanding death and dying. Indeed, the tradition emphasizes turning toward the realities of sickness, old age, and death - and using those very experiences to develop wisdom and liberating compassion. In recent decades, Buddhist chaplains and caregivers all over the world have been drawing on this tradition to contribute greatly to the development of modern palliative and hospice care in the secular world at large. Specifically Buddhist hospice programs have also been further developing and applying traditional Buddhist practices of preparing for death, attending to the dying and comforting the bereaved. Buddhist Care for the Dying and Bereaved contains comprehensive overviews of the best of such initiatives, drawn from diverse Buddhist traditions, and written by practitioners who embody the best of modern contemplative hospice care programs practiced all over the world today.

Buddhist Dead: Practices, Discourses, Representations By: Bryan Cuevas & Jacqueline Stone (Editors)

Our Price: $65.00 Members Price: $58.50

In its teachings, practices, and institutions, Buddhism in its varied Asian forms has been--and continues to be--centrally concerned with death and the dead. Yet surprisingly "death in Buddhism" has received little sustained scholarly attention. The Buddhist Dead offers the first comparative investigation of this topic across the major Buddhist cultures of India, Sri Lanka, China, Japan, Tibet, and Burma. Its individual essays, representing a range of methods, shed light on a rich array of traditional Buddhist practices for the dead and dying; the sophisticated but often paradoxical discourses about death and the dead in Buddhist texts; and the varied representations of the dead and the afterlife found in Buddhist funerary art and popular literature. This important collection moves beyond the largely text- and doctrine-centered approaches characterizing an earlier generation of Buddhist scholarship and expands its treatment of death to include ritual, devotional, and material culture.

Culture of the Book in Tibet By: Kurtis R Schaeffer

|
Our Price: $45.00 Members Price: $40.50

|

The history of the book in Tibet involves more than literary trends and trade routes. Functioning as material, intellectual, and symbolic object, the book has been an instrumental tool in the construction of Tibetan power and authority, and its history opens a crucial window onto the cultural, intellectual, and economic life of an immensely influential Buddhist society.
Spanning the fourteenth to the eighteenth centuries, Kurtis R. Schaeffer envisions the scholars and hermits, madmen and ministers, kings and queens who produced Tibet's massive canons. He describes how Tibetan scholars edited and printed works of religion, literature, art, and science and what this indicates about the interrelation of material and cultural practices. The Tibetan book is at once the embodiment of the Buddha's voice, a principal means of education, a source of tradition and authority, an economic product, a finely crafted aesthetic object, a medium of Buddhist written culture, and a symbol of the religion itself. Books stood at the center of debates on the role of libraries in religious institutions, the relative merits of oral and written teachings, and the economy of religion in Tibet.

Terrifying sounds are heard such as the din of a tumbling mountain, the crashing of storm waves on the ocean, the crackling noise of fire and the howling of wind. There again, we should not be afraid but rather think that these are only deluded, manifestations of our mind without real existence. Bokar Rinpoche was born to a nomadic family in Western Tibet in 1940. Recognized as a reincarnation by the Sixteenth Karmapa, he studied at Bokar and Tsurphu Monasteries. He left Tibet at twenty and completed two three-year retreats under the guidance of Kaku Rinpoche.A remarkable Kagyu Meditation master, he teaches practice in Buddhist centers around the world snd conducts a meditation seminar for Westerns each year in India. His radiant peace of mind , ineffable love, and the refinement of his intelligence are signs of his great accomplishment. Through his profound wisdom and the clarity of his teaching, he helps anyone who wants to engage on the path of meditation. Buddhism asserts that all beings live beyond the various fluctuations of this life. Death is merely a passage to rebirth in another realm such as the human world, a pure land or the flowering of the ultimate nature of the mind.. Using the wisdom available in Tibetan Buddhism, Bokar Rinpoche explains and guides us through the experience of death and beyond.

The Tibetan Word Delog (DAY-loak) refers to one who has crossed the threshold of death and returned to tell about it. For Delog Dawa Drolma, a woman renowned as one of the great realization holders of Vajrayana Buddhism in this century, being a delog meant that she lay without any vital sign of breath, pulse, or warmth for five days. During that time the link between her mind and body was released and her consciousness journeyed to other realms of experience.

[...] The topic tonight will be a brief introduction into some aspects of the Buddhist teachigs pertaining to the inevitable experience of death. This topic has its foundations in the “four ultimate limitations”, which are: 1) birth and death are intrinsically related, in that birth is a necessary condition for the coming of death; 2) any rise in popularity, fame or renown is a correlative and necessary condition for a decline in popularity, fame or renown; 3) any meeting, gathering, or joining together must occur before separation or parting could consequently exist; and 4) material accumulation is a correlative and necessary condition for a loss and disintegration of material goods. These four ultimate limitations describe the nature of samsaric existance. [...]

Who are we? Where did we come from? Where are we going? How do we get there? Many have asked these questions, and many have attempted to answer them. But there is another question Good Life, Good Death asks us to contemplate: how does the idea of life after death affect how we live our lives? Gehlek Rimpoche tells stories of the mystical Tibet he lived in, as well as the contemporary America he is now a citizen of, and shares the wisdom of the great masters. He asks us to open our minds and see if we can entertain a bigger picture of life after life, even for a moment.

Apart from the prayers stemming from the well-known Tibetan Book of the Dead, there is a remarkable lack of ritual material available in the Western world for those who wish to perform a Buddhist funeral. This gap has now been filled by a welcome new publication from Wandel Verlag:
According to our author Padma 'phrin-las (1641-1718), disciple of the Great Fifth Dalai Lama and fourth incarnation of the gter-ston Rig-'dzin rgod-ldem, there are three main stages in the care of those who have come to the end of their lives. These consist of facilitating the transference of consciousness (pho ba) at the moment of death, performing postmortem rituals in order to guide the deceased along pathways of escape from the six modes of unhappy rebirth in samsara, and cremating the corpse with due dignity. Associated rites include prayers of good wishes for the deceased to be reborn in the pureland of Amitabha's Blissful Paradise (Sukhavati), and the casting of small votive images (tsha tsha) from any fragments of bone that may remain after the cremation has been completed. Taken as a whole, such rites are designed to ensure that the good karma of the deceased is used to maximum effect so that he or she may be liberated from bondage to an endless cycle of confusion and pain, obtaining instead the three kaya of an awakened being. All the relevant texts have been gathered together in the present volume, which thus contains a full set of instructions for those who find themselves called upon to care for the Buddhist dead. Together with the Tibetan texts and English translations, this book contains transliterated prayers that may be chanted with greater ease on such solemn occasions, with full explanations of how to perform a full Buddhist funeral ceremony, by either burial or cremation. May this work bring happiness and comfort to the living, as well as blissful liberation to the deceased!

A fascinating look at Buddhist, especially Tibetan, views of death and their implications for a Buddhist bioethics.
This book explores the Buddhist view of death and its implications for contemporary bioethics. Writing primarily from within the Tibetan tradition, author Karma Lekshe Tsomo discusses Buddhist notions of human consciousness and personal identity and how these figure in the Buddhist view of death. Beliefs about death and enlightenment and states between life and death are also discussed. Tsomo goes on to examine such hot-button topics as cloning, abortion, assisted suicide, euthanasia, organ donation, genetic engineering, and stem-cell research within a Buddhist context, introducing new ways of thinking about these highly controversial issues.

Where Western society views death as the last taboo, the Tibetan tradition incorporates meditation on death into everyday life. Tibetan Buddhists believe that a conscious awareness of one's own impermanence allows a person to live a happy, fulfilled life. Over the centuries the Tibetans have developed a wide-ranging literature on death, including inspirational poetry and prose, prayers, and practical works on care for the dying. Presented here are nine Tibetan texts. Important writings by the Second, Seventh, and Thirteenth Dalai Lamas, and by Karma Lingpa, author of the Tibetan Book of the Dead, are included. Topics such as meditation techniques to prepare for death, inspirational accounts of the deaths of saints and yogis, and methods for training the mind in the transference of consciousness at the time of death. By guiding the reader through the concepts upon which the text is based, the terms it uses, and the imagery it contains, Fremantle relates its world of symbols to our everyday mental and emotional experiences. The five deities of different colors that represent the five styles of wisdom and confusion, the symbolic sexual union of deities, the peaceful and wrathful deities that represent different states of mind - all are encountered in the process of dying. By looking closely at these vivid and extraordinary images of Tibetan Buddhism, Fremantle guides us toward an understanding of that mysterious tradition

A distillation of the acclaimed English translation of a revered Tibetan classic.
The Tibetan Book of the Dead is the most significant of all Tibetan Buddhist writings in the West and one of the most inspirational and compelling texts in world literature.
In Meditations on Living, Dying and Loss, Graham Coleman, the editor of Viking’s acclaimed unabridged translation of The Tibetan Book of the Dead, collects the most beautifully written passages, ones that draw out the central perspectives most relevant to modern experience: What is death? How can we help those who are dying? And how can we come to terms with bereavement? New to this edition are Coleman’s introduction and his brilliant and incisive essays, which preface each chapter and provide the seeker entrée to these ancient insights. With introductory commentary by His Holiness the Dalai Lama and a highly praised translation by Gyurme Dorje, this succinct but authoritative volume will convey the profundity of the original to those hungry for a better understanding of this life and the next.

This commentary is based on the six bardos teachings from a series of hidden treasure texts known as the Profound Dharma of Natural Liberation through the Intention of the Peaceful and Wrathful Ones (Zab chos zhi khro dgongs pa rang grol), discovered by the great terton Karma Lingpa in the fourteenth century. The word "bardo," made popular in the West through the English translation of the Bardo Thodol or The Tibetan Book of the Dead, which also belongs to the same series of treasure texts, means an intermediate or in-between state. The practice of the six bardos, according to the hermeneutics of the Nyingma school of Tibetan Buddhism, is essentially the meditative practice of living and dying.Natural Appearances, Natural Liberation not only contains very practical advice, but also hasmany teachings of the Nyingma tantric tradition embedded in it. The original text is not intended as a study of spiritualism or psychology. Neither is it intended to be viewed as handbook for taking care of the deceased, nor as a treatise on emptiness. The intention is to condense the very deep and profound tantric teachings of the six bardos into practices approachable by all sentient beings so that many can swiftly attain various states of liberation. This book offers a scholarly but accessible explanation of the ancient wisdom embedded in this ancient Buddhist classic.Tam Shek-wing (1935-) is a Buddhist scholar, painter, poet, writer and social critic. He is the founder of the Vajrayana Buddhism Association and Sino-Tibetan Buddhist Studies Association in North America.Master Tam was born in Guangzhou, China. As a young man, he received systematic training in the Nyingma school of Tibetan Buddhism under the guidance of H.H. Dudjom Rinpoche. In 1986, Master Tam emigrated from Hong Kong to Hawaii, and then to Toronto in 1993. As early as the late 1970s, Master Tam began publishing writings on Buddhism, with an emphasis on the teachings and meditative practice in Vajrayana Buddhism. To establish Sino-Tibetan Buddhist studies as a legitimate field in Buddhology, Master Tamhelped organize publication of the Monograph Series in Sino-Tibetan Buddhist Studies. Originally part of a larger sutra on the six perfections that included the well known Perfection of Wisdom Sutra, the Skill in Means Sutra explicates the other five perfections of the Bodhisattva.

According to legend, this great work is one of the texts that the honored guru Padma-Sambhava concealed during his visit to Tibet in the late eighth century. Because Tibetans of that day and age were not yet prepared for such teachings, Padma-Sambhava was forced to hide his books in stones, lakes, and pillars. Now, in the form of the ever-popular Tibetan Book of the Dead, these teachings are constantly being discovered and rediscovered by Western readers of many different backgrounds--a phenomenon which began in 1927 with Oxford's first edition of Dr. Evans-Wentz's landmark volume. While it is traditionally used as a mortuary text, to be read or recited in the presence of a dead or dying person, this book--which relates the whole experience of death and rebirth in three intermediate states of being--was originally understood as a guide not only for the dead but also for the living. As a contribution to the science of death and dying as well as to the belief in life after death, The Tibetan Book of the Dead is unique among the sacred texts of the world, for its socio-cultural influence in this regard is without comparison.

The Tibetan Book of the Dead: Awakening Upon Dying, with
introductory commentary by Dzogchen Buddhist master Chogyal Namkhai
Norbu, is a new translation of the ancient text also known as The Great Liberation through Hearing in the Intermediate State.
Both a practical guide and intriguing historical, cultural, and
spiritual document, this new version incorporates recent discoveries
that have allowed for a better translation of previously ambiguous
passages. Revealing a set of instructions designed to
facilitate the inner liberation of the dead or dying person, the book
provides a guide to navigating the bardo--the interval between death and
rebirth. Originally composed by Padmasambhava, an important Indian
master of the eighth century, the Tibetan Book of the Dead was concealed in Tibet until it was discovered in the fourteenth century by Karma Lingpa, a famous Tibetan terton
(discoverer of ancient texts). Describing in detail the characteristics
and fantastic visions of each stage beyond death, the book includes
invocations to be read aloud to the dying person, to help his or her
successful journey toward the stage of liberation. Chogyal
Namkhai Norbu's introduction clarifies the texts from the Dzogchen point
of view and provides a scholarly summary of the ancient material based
on his oral teachings and written works. In addition, material from
several of Namkhai Norbu's more recent written works and oral teachers
have been added, including an essay on the four intermediate states
after death entitled Birth, Life, and Death. A full-color 16-page insert of traditional Tibetan art highlights Tibet's unique aesthetic wisdom.

Padmasambhava, founder of the Tibetan school of Buddhism, dictated the Bardo Thodol to his wife. The text, known in English as The Great Liberation through Hearing or The Tibetan Book of The Dead, is a guide to enlightenment after death, and freedom from the physical body. The text was interred shortly after it was written, and lay buried for years. Known as a terma or treasure text, it was discovered generations after its interment by Padmasambhava's disciples, who began reading it aloud and meditating on its meaning.
Despite its name, The Tibetan Book of The Dead is not a guide to death. It is a guide to life. A guide on how to live, how to move through the transitional stage between life and death, how to go beyond death and how to return through reincarnation. There are several English translations of the text, most of them written using old fashioned phrases that are hard to understand. This version is written in simpler English, and using contemporary terms, making the meaning much more accessible to the modern reader.
The Tibetan Book of The Dead is meant to be read aloud, in passages, and pondered over carefully. Hearing the text and contemplating its meaning is a method of opening the mind to new ways of thinking and freeing the mind from conventional thoughts. Ultimately, it can lead the attentive hearer to enlightenment.

Tibetan Rituals of Death: Buddhist Funerary Practices By: Margaret Gouin

Our Price: $130.00 Members Price: $117.00

|

This book describes and analyses the structure and performance of
Tibetan Buddhist death rituals, and situates that performance within the
wider context of Buddhist death practices generally. Drawing on a
detailed and systematic comparative survey of existing records of
Tibetan funerary practices, including historical travel accounts,
anthropological and ethnographic literature, Tibetan texts and academic
studies, it demonstrates that there is no standard form of funeral in
Tibetan Buddhism, although certain elements are common.
The structure of the book follows the twin trajectories of benefiting
the deceased and protecting survivors; in the process, it reveals a
rich and complex panoply of activities, some handled by religious
professionals and others by lay persons. This information is examined to
identify similarities and differences in practices, and the degree to
which Tibetan Buddhist funeral practices are consistent with the
mortuary rituals of other forms of Buddhism. A number of elements in
these death rites which at first appear to be unique to Tibetan Buddhism
may only be Tibetan in their surface characteristics, while having
roots in practices which pre-date the transmission of Buddhism to Tibet.
Filling a gap in the existing literature on Tibetan Buddhism, this
book poses research challenges that will engage future scholars in the
field of Buddhism, Tibetan Buddhism and Anthropology.

In Travels in the Netherworld , Bryan J. Cuevas examines a fascinating but little-known genre of Tibetan narrative literature about the delok , ordinary men and women who claim to have died, traveled through hell, and then returned from the afterlife. These narratives enjoy audiences ranging from the most sophisticated monastic scholars to pious townsfolk, villagers, and nomads. Their accounts emphasize the universal Buddhist principles of impermanence and worldly suffering, the fluctuations of karma, and the feasibility of obtaining a favorable rebirth through virtue and merit. Providing a clear, detailed analysis of four vivid return-from-death tales, including the stories of a Tibetan housewife, a lama, a young noble woman, and a Buddhist monk, Cuevas argues that these narratives express ideas about death and the afterlife that held wide currency among all classes of faithful Buddhists in Tibet.
Relying on a diversity of traditional Tibetan sources, Buddhist canonical scriptures, scholastic textbooks, ritual and meditation manuals, and medical treatises, in addition to the delok works themselves, Cuevas surveys a broad range of popular Tibetan Buddhist ideas about death and dying. He explores beliefs about the vulnerability of the soul and its journey beyond death, karmic retribution and the terrors of hell, the nature of demons and demonic possession, ghosts, and reanimated corpses. Cuevas argues that these extraordinary accounts exhibit flexibility between social and religious categories that are conventionally polarized and concludes that, contrary to the accepted wisdom, such rigid divisions as elite and folk, monastic and lay religion are not sufficiently representative of traditional Tibetan Buddhism on the ground. This study offers innovative perspectives on popular religion in Tibet and fills a gap in an important field of Tibetan literature.
