Description   <br>Buddhism originated with the teachings of Shakyamuni, the historical Buddha, who achieved enlightenment and educated others about the path to self-realization. The Buddha’s teachings spread from his native India to much of the rest of Asia, each culture adding its own imprint. Traveling storytellers used thangkas, which depict various deities and other Buddhist figures, as visual aids in relating their tales. Over time, such paintings became models for devotional scrolls and teaching tools used by Buddhist monks. The twelve exquisite thangkas and hanging scrolls in this calendar were made in Tibet, Nepal, Korea, Japan, and China between the thirteenth century and contemporary times.
