About the author
THE VERY VENERABLE KALU RINPOCHE Lineage Holder of the Shangpa Kagyu and Karma Kagyu Traditions
Beloved world-wide for his gentle, sincere, and straightforward way of presenting the Buddhist teachings, the Very Venerable Kalu Rinpoche is universally revered as one of the greatest Tibetan yogis of the century. Spending over 30 years meditating in hermitages and caves in the Himalayas, he achieved a profound level of realization and has often been compared to the great Buddhist saint, Milarepa. In their directness, depth, and humor, this collection of oral teachings is accessible to all interested in the path to liberation. As the teachings are imbued with the spiritual qualities of a great meditation master, this volume will be of inestimable value to advanced practitioners of all traditions, as well.
Gently Whispered, Ven. Kalu Rinpoche, Station Hill, 292 pages, $26.95
The late Kalu Rinpoche was born in 1905 in Eastern Tibet. At fifteen, he gave his first public teaching and soon afterward entered the traditional three-year, three-month retreat. From the age of eighteen, Rinpoche studied with several eminent teachers in Tibet and then began a period of mountain retreat. Rinpooche spent many years teaching and directing retreats in Tibet.
By 1955, he had revitalized the Shangpa Kagyu lineage and was a senior lama at the Karma Kagyu lineage when the sixteenth Gyalwa Karmapa sent him to India and Bhutan to prepare for the anticipated exodus of refugees from Chinese occupied Tibet.
In 1971, H.E. Kalu Rinpoche was sent on a teacing journey to the West by His Holiness Karmapa. During his many subsequent visits, he founded numerous dharma and retreat centers
