This brief survey is intended to document the history and the present condition of some old sites of Tibetan Buddhism in the region of Phempo, only some thirty kilometers north of Lhasa. Neither meant for an exclusively specialized readership, nor as a guidebook for trekkers, this booklet records the special characteristics of these places in a time of rapid change: much of the traditional Tibetan architecture is endangered by "modernization", and the monastic culture is restricted and controlled by the authorities. Thus, the future fate of these places cannot be predicted. It is hoped that this survey will help to preserve the knowledge about some of the traditional structures of these old places of Buddhism and bring out their historical significance as well as their special atmosphere.
