Traleg Kyabgon Rinpoche has been teaching the Kagyu mahamudra system of practice for over 20 years. He is considered one of the greatest contemporary masters of this lineage whose personal experience of mahamudra meditation contributes to the extraordinary clarity of his explanation. For many students of Tibetan Buddhism, Traleg Rinpoche has brought meditation practice to a new level of accessibility and intimacy.

 This set of talks entitled was given at Karma Triyana Dharmachakra in June 2008. Traleg Rinpoche presented the topic using the outline similar to that found in his book under the same title (Shambhala Publications, 2004). Rinpoche starts out by explaining the importance of meditation in general and by placing the tradition of mahamudra in historical context. He then discusses the mahamudra shamatha meditation, obstacles to meditation, and meditation experiences. Next, he presents an overview of vipashyana meditation in its fundamental, mahayana, and mahamudra varieties. In conclusion, Rinpoche goes over the fruition of mahamudra, the four yogas of mahamudra.

Traleg Kyabgon Rinpoche was born in 1955 in Eastern Tibet. At the age of two, he was recognized by His Holiness the Sixteenth Gyalwang Karmapa as the ninth incarnation of the Traleg Tulkus and enthroned as Abbot of Thrangu Monastery.

After the communist invasion in 1959, Traleg Rinpoche was taken to safety in India where he continued the rigorous training prescribed for tulkus born with the responsibilities of a major lineage holder. This training included five years at the Sanskrit University in Varanasi, India, and several years at Rumtek Monastery in Sikkim, India.

In 1980, Rinpoche went to Australia where he established the Kagyu E-Vam Buddhist Institute in Melbourne. Later, he also established the E-Vam Buddhist Institute in the US with its primary location in Chatham, New York (www.evam.org)
