Manjushri is one of the most important bodhisattvas, or enlightenment beings, in the Buddhist pantheon, the patron deity of wisdom, education, composition, and memory. He represents the wisdom of all the Buddhas of the ten directions and the three times and can manifest in different forms depending on the circumstances. Typically, Manjushri is depicted as a beautiful youth wielding a flaming sword that cuts through the ignorance that obscures the true nature of reality and binds beings to a cycle of suffering. In his left hand he holds a book, the Perfection of Wisdom Sutra (Prajnaparamita Sutra), both the source and embodiment of his awakened understanding.
