Description
It is natural in the evolution of rich literature of deep intellectual or spiritual significance for an explicit hermeneutical system to develop. The particular hermeneutical approach developed in a particular tradition my not necessarily be entirely applicable outside that tradition but it is inevitable that any such system will contain elements that have wider application.
The hermeneutical approach that has evolved from the profound Buddhist Philosophical tradition is inextricably associated with its stereological system an articulation of the path to enlightenment constituted by the such qualities as universal love and compassion. From the Buddhist perspective the cultivation of these qualities is necessary both for individual liberation and also for social progress. Buddhist hermeneutics is a constitutive part of this path.
I am grateful to Prof. Nirbhai Singh for consenting to deliver the 2002 Prof. Lal Mani Joshi Commemorial Lecture. Prof. Joshi contributed enormously to Tibetan and Buddhist Studies and was closely associated with this Institute. I am confident that the publication of his lecture, "The Philosophy of Interpretation of Sacred Scriptures" will benefit our scholars and students and will honour the memory of Prof. Joshi.
