Description

Throughout the cultures of the Orient, the Buddhist stupa has been perhaps the most pervasive and symbolic form of architecture. In early times, stupas were "symbols of illumination"- memorials which were intended to inspire later generations to follow the path to Enlightenment. Like the Egyptian pyramid, the Buddhist stupa evolved, not only as a repository for the relics of revered persons, but as a universal symbol, the embodiment of all knowledge contained in a single piece of architecture. Rightly interpreted and understood by both reason and intuition, the stupa transcends mere words and concepts in revealing the "secrets" of old: the harmony and perfection of the natural laws of the universe, as well as the "key" to awakening higher awareness in man. As stated in the foreword, "It is through the language of archetypal symbols that we reconnect ourselves with the primordial ground from which all human culture has sprung and through which we may discover our common heritage."
Lama Govinda's discussion of the relationship of the stupa to the cakras, or centers of "psychic force," and to the traditional Buddhist stages of meditation are particularly significant in understanding our own development of consciousness.
