In the past, there were innumerable siddhas in India and Tibet. But now, though the techniques of Vajrayana are still profound and effective, there seem to be comparatively few. The problem is not with the power and availability of the teachings - it is in how we practice them, especially our motivation for practice. If the main condition for awakening, bodhichitta, is absent, none of our practices will be effective. Karma Chagme Rinpoche left us this impassioned advice: "All tantrikas of the future, if you don't understand this, even though you spend your whole life doing sadhana practice - forget about attaining buddhahood in one lifetime. This won't even lead you in the direction of awakening." Khenpo Karhar Rinpoche explains Chapter 6,7,8 and 9 of the Retreat Manual composed by the renowned 17th century Kagyu Master, Karma Chagme Rinpoche, which treat the subjects of refuge, bodhichitta and protecting others through one's practice in a poignant commentary on the essential basis of practice.
