On a quiet winter morning in 1937, several men on horseback rode into the tiny Tibetan village of Taktser. The man we call the Buddha was born as Siddhartha in Nepal around 563 b.c. to the king and queen of Shakya. After his birth, a great seer decreed that the baby would be holy, and early on Siddhartha exhibited great intelligence and empathy. His father wanted him to become king, not a holy man, but Siddhartha was not satisfied by his pampered life, and was moved by the hardships of the commoners. Despite his father's wishes, Siddhartha ultimately left behind his kingdom and all his worldly possessions in his search for enlightenment.
This biography focuses on the childhood of the Buddha: a man with a fascinating history and an enormous contemporary following.

In this radiant retelling of an ancient legend, a small boy left at the gates of a Buddhist temple is adopted by the monks who live there. While the monks travel the world seeking enlightenment, the boy tends the temple garden. He befriends a blind monk who sits by the garden gate, too old to travel. One day the old monk tells the boy, "Buddha is in the garden!" and the boy, rapt with the prospect, runs through the gate. Buddha, however, is nowhere to be seen; instead, the boy finds an injured animal. This happens three times, and each time the boy finds a different creature to care for. In the moving conclusion, the boy discovers the true nature of enlightenment, to the surprise of the monks returning from abroad. Bouchard and Zhong-Yang have composed a classic and beautiful tale--the fourth in the award-winning Chinese Legends series. Ages 6 & up

Around the beginning of the common era, Indian Buddhists began to collect fables, or jataka tales, illuminating various human virtues and foiblesùfrom kindness, cooperation, loyalty and self-discipline on the one hand to greed, pride, foolishness, and treachery on the other. Instead of populating these stories with people, they cast the animals of their immediate environment in the leading rolesùwhich may have given the tales a universal appeal that helped them travel around the world, surfacing in the Middle East as 'sop's fables and in various other guises throughout East and Southeast Asia, Africa, Russia, and Europe.

‘Neither Night nor Day’ is the magical tale of a Tibetan boy who sets out on a journey in search of a cure for his ailing mother. Travelling across vast upland plateaus, over rivers and dangerous high Himalayan passes, he encounters a succession of lamas, magicians, strange yogis, yoginis and animal guides, who help and give him advice along the way. The setting and culture of the story is primarily Tibetan but there is enough ambivalence in the telling to give it relevance to any child in any culture whose imagination has the freedom to penetrate the apparently concrete fabric of existence.
Written with descriptive colour and humour, the book is also illustrated by the author’s own extraordinary art work, full of charm and completely authentic Tibetan cultural details. The paintings are an integral part of the story and conspire to usher a reader into the magical ambience of the tale.

Pomegranate’s Tibetan Symbols and Designs coloring book features drawings based on 22 Tibetan objects. Coloring pages are blank on the back so they can be cut out and displayed.
Introduction We give all sorts of things an extra layer of meaning, a symbolic meaning. A white bird in a painting is a dove, but it’s also a symbol of peace. Since peace is an idea, it can’t be drawn directly, so artists have found a way to convey that idea with a picture of a white bird.
In Tibet, carpets and other fabrics are decorated with monsters, birds, flowers, and designs. The designs don’t have a symbolic meaning, but the dragons and cranes and lotus blossoms each carry a special meaning, like the dove. We’ve chosen twenty-two Tibetan objects from the collection of the Newark Museum, each of them covered with pictures, for you to color. They are shown as small reproductions on the inside front and back covers. The captions on the pages that follow tell you something about Tibetan symbolism.
The last page of this book is blank so that you can draw and color your own picture. Fill it with snow lions, lotus flowers, and your own symbolic creatures and plants.
One forty-eight page 8 1/2 x 11" book with twenty-two images to color. Each illustration is reproduced in a small, color version of the original artwork and as a full-page black line drawing.
