Bon, Tibet's Ancient Religion By: Christoph Baumer

Our Price: $60.00 Members Price: $54.00

|

Until well into the eighth century, Bon was the dominant religion and culture on the roof of the world; it is in essence the belief system of ancient Tibet. From the second half of the eighth century onward, B÷n was superseded by Buddhism, which had traveled north from India, and the two religions came to influence each other in both doctrine and ritual. In spite of the eventual dominance of Buddhism through its position as the state religion, however, a reformed Bon school has been able to assert itself down to the present.

"No serious scholar of Buddhist studies can afford to ignore this argumentative, challenging, and provocative set of essays.... In each case, Schopen's arguments are refreshing, honest, often brilliant, and always cogently presented." --Journal of Religion "Shopen has written a number of articles that have challenged some of the most basic assumptions in the field of Buddhist Studies, and this book is a collection of the most influential of his works. Several are rightly regarded as classic studies in the field, and all should be required reading for anyone with more than a passing interest in Buddhist Studies." --Japanese Journal of Religious Studies, Fall 1998
"Schopen's treatment of this material has been extremely insightful and original, and his work has been instrumental in overturning many of the cherished convictions that had long constituted the 'received wisdom' of Buddhist studies. In particular, his articles have prompted significant revision in thought regarding the development of Mahayana and regarding the role of the monastic religious in Buddhist cultic life." --Philosophy East and West

The origin and spread of Buddhism has been a landmark in the history of Greater India (Maha Bharata or Brhattara Bharata) the boundaries of which covered a large part of Asia. As stated earlier, Shakyamuni, the Buddha, was the inheritor of an ancient, rich and varied cultural tradition of a very high order and he formulated and established a new culture out of it which was theoretically enlightening and practically redeeming from the labyrinth of suffering, imperfection, impermanence and other vicissitudes of life.

Buddhism is one of the important religions of world. Albeit Lord Buddha was not born in Andhra Desa, but the contribution of Andhra Desa to Buddhism is not small. Famous Buddhist Stupas and Viharas as seen at Amaravati, Nagarjunakonda, Bhattiprolu, Guntupalli, Chandavaram are only a few to name in Andhra Desa. With the passing time, new discoveries on Buddhism are pouring in from different corners. Recent discoveries of Totlakonda, Bavikonda, Pavuralakonda etc. from Andhra Pradesh throw welcome light on the subject. This publication contains the papers presented at the seminar, "Contribution of Andhra Desa to Buddhism" organized by Birla Archaeological & Cultural Research Institute, Hyderabad a few years ago. The purpose of the seminar is to bring to light the new discoveries and throw further light on the already existing information on Buddhism from Andhra Desa in particular and India in general. Research is a never ending process and results of research will always be either finding out something new or updating the existing information with the new discoveries. This publication contains papers submitted by both seasoned and budding scholars covering almost all the aspects of Buddhism like art, architecture, philosophy, survey reports, excavation findings etc. As mentioned above, there are papers altogether with new discoveries and papers highlighting new points on the already existing information.

As Tibet enters into its 50th year of Chinese rule, questions of cultural distinctions and similarities become ever more important in determining the future of the relationship between the Snow Lion and the Red Dragon. But often left unsaid is the long history the two countries share, and the significant cultural interchanges that have existed over time. Setting political agenda aside, Buddhism Between Tibet and China features a collection of noteworthy essays that probe the nature of this relationship, from the Tang Dynasty (618–907 CE) to the present. Annotated and contextualized by noted scholar Matthew Kapstein and others, the historical accounts that comprise this volume display the rich dialogue between Tibet and China in the areas of scholarship, the fine arts, politics, philosophy, and religion. This thoughtful book provides insight into the surprisingly complex history behind the relationship from a variety of geographical regions.

In a compact narrative account, Lee Feigon examines the country behind the myths to locate the origins of modern Tibet and to sort out its controversial relationship with China. In penetrating the veil of mystery that the West has often constructed over Tibet, he reveals how long and distinguished is its history and how recent is the idea that Tibet is part of China.

Indian Popular Religions and the Formation of Buddhism
Early European histories of India frequently reflected colonialist agendas. The idea that Indian society had declined from an earlier Golden Age helped justify the colonial presence. It was said, for example, that modern Buddhism had fallen away from its original identity as a purely rational philosophy that arose in the mythical 5th-century BCE Golden Age unsullied by the religious and cultural practices that surrounded it.

"With a history spanning more' than two and a half millennia and over 300 million adherents worldwide, Buddhism is one of humankind's most interesting and populous religions. While a historical dictionary of Buddhism must consider the various periods, events, individuals, circumstances, texts, and concepts from which the history of Buddhism takes its shape, it must also consider the sacred sites in Buddhist geography, the festivals, rites, and rituals that configure Buddhist religious practice, the manifestation of Buddhist religiosity as witnessed in biography, art, and mythology, and the soteriological methods employed by Buddhists throughout their history.
"This book provides a comprehensive framework for understanding Buddhism as a historically compelling religion. Because the study of Buddhism is a difficult task, including so many varied cultures, this volume seeks to assist the reader by providing a carefully designed pronunciation guide to Buddhist canonical languages, an overview of the Buddhist scriptures preserved in Pali, Chinese, and Tibetan, a chronology of Buddhist history and an extensive introduction to the history, doctrine, and community life of the religion. With an extremely comprehensive, topically organized bibliography, perhaps the most extensive of any book on Buddhism that not solely a bibliography."

Representing the culmination of Dr. Kalupahana's thirty years of scholarly research and reflection, "A History of Buddhism" provides a complete, detailed analysis of both early and later Buddhism. Part 1 is devoted to early Buddhism, opening with a thorough examination of pre-Buddhist thought and its absolutist character, followed by a biographical sketch of Siddartha, the historical Buddha. Each of the following nine chapters examines a major theme in Buddhist discourse: knowledge and understanding, experience and theory, language and communication, freedom and happiness, human personality, human suffering, the object, the moral life, and popular religious thought. Part 2 examines later Buddhism by mapping its continuities with and divergences from early Buddhist doctrine. Dr. Kalupahana illustrates the movement of some schools toward substantialism and absolutism while other schools made a persistent attempt to retain the original teachings of the Buddha.

This volume provides a comprehensive survey of Indian Buddhism and its subsequent establishment in Tibet. It concentrates on the tantric period of Buddhist theory and practice, from the eighth to the thirteenth centuries, when the Tibetans were actively engaged in absorbing all they could find of Buddhist culture and religion into their own country. Snellgrove emphasizes the significant role played by the Central Asian kingdoms along the ancient Silk Route in the gradual process of Tibetan conversion. he draws convincingly upon documents of the time to illustrate the cultural changes that swept Tibet as a result of its rule over an extensive empire from the seventh to the ninth centuries -- a period of history largely forgotten by the Tibetans themselves when they later embarked upon the wholesale importation of Buddhism directly from Northern India. Throughout, the author quotes extensively from numerous original sources, many of which have never before been translated into English. The illustrations include iconographic art as well as photographs of historical interest.

Before T.W. Rhys Davids and some others ventured into interpretations of obscure sources of Buddhist philosophy and history, most of the material was lying scattered. It was strange, and very characteristic of the real meaning of true Buddhism, that there was no life of Gautama the Buddha in the Buddhist scriptures. Rhs Davids, in writing this book, regarded "Buddhism as a different kind of religion divorced from all that is known of religion in the traditional sense of the term."
