This extraordinary teaching, given in the living room of a sangha member’s home in Texas, has become a truly classic teaching because of Thrangu Rinpoche’s pithy, brilliant and clear commentary on the root text of Jamgon Kongtrul Lodro Thaye’s The Essential Points of Creation and Completion That will Benefit the Beginner Who Has Enetered the Path, as published in Sarah Harding’s 1996 edition of Creation and Completion: Essential Points of Tantric Meditation. First widely circulated as audio cassettes in 1997 and 1998, this teaching was transcribed, the root text added, and publihsed as The Essence of Creation and Completion in New Zealand in 2000. Later Rinpoche’s teaching was added to the 2002 edition of Sarah Harding’s book. These five talks are a definitive commentary by one of the truly great masters of the Kagyu lineage on the profound meaning of all paractices involving Creation and Completion stages. Because Rinpoche spoke Tibetan at length, the CD’s are primarily the voice of the translator, Lama Yeshe Gyamtso.

In 1958, the Chinese invaded Kham in Tibet, destroying monasteries and imprisoning monks. In the previous summer, Khenpo Gangshar foresaw that the difficulties Tibet was already experiencing were going to escalate. In order to help the monks progress rapidly on the path so they could meet their challenges skillfully, he gave this teaching on naturally liberating whatever you meet. Thrangu Rinppoche, Chogyam Trungpa Rinpoche and Khenpo Karthar Rinpoche received this profound cycle of teachings. Khenpo Gangshar summarizes this teaching at the outset:

“A worthy student is one who aspires to practice the profoundest of the profound and secret vajrayana - the essential oral instructions of all the anuttara yoga tantras or the nature of the realization of effortless ati. To meet the needs of such a student, these three points should be taught: The preliminary steps of mind training, the main practice of pointing-out, and the subsequent application, combining the profound advice into key points.”

The preliminary steps include the analytical meditation of the pandita. The main practice, the resting meditation of a kusulu is presented in two points: resolving and distinguishing. The profound advice includes instructions on the wisdom of emotions, taking the bardo state as the path and taking sleep as the path.

In these talks Thrangu Rinpoche provides clear and concise commentary on this amazing text. Rinpoche concludes several talks with meditation sessions. Others conclude with question-answer sessions with students.

In Sutra, Phowa means Transmission of Mind or Consciousness. It is stated in the Tantra that Phowa is the swift, supreme path to free oneself from samsara and to attain enlightenment. The benefits of having the connection with and receiving teaching on Phowa are incredibly immense. It is also applicable to those who do not practice it and those who have strong emotional afflictions with no desire to denounce samsara. Phowa can purify negative karma and is most helpful at the time of death. Those who have strong negative karma such as having committed the five serious offences who would normally be reborn in the lower realms upon death can even be reborn in the upper realms.

Saraha’s Doha for the King, Audio CD

The text of instructions on which these talks are based is Saraha’s Doha for the King. When Saraha encountered a wishom dakini and began to engage in non-traditional yogic practices, the local King tried to convince Saraha to return to a more traditional monastic approach. In response, Saraha sang this doha. A doha is not a systematic and gradual instruction on practice. Rather, it is a song expressing bliss resulting from personal realization. As a result of hearing this doha, the King gained realization. Saraha’s doha is organized in terms of the ground, path and fruition of mahamudra, each of which is summarized and then presented more extensively using various analogies. Thrangu Rinpoche’s teaching provides clear, profound and extensive commentary on Saraha’s doha.
This teaching was presented at an 8-day-long event in July 2002 to celebrate the consecration of 35 acres of land in Crestone, Colorado that has been given to Thrangu Rinpoche by the Manitou Foundation for the purpose of building a retreat center. Khenpo Karthar Rinpoche was present for the entire event, gave one of the 12 talks, and participated in the land consecration ceremony.
