Lama Kathy Wesley begins these talks on transforming mental afflictions by talking about mindfulness or calm abiding meditation as the basis for transforming mental aflliction. Mindfulness allows us to recognize mental afflictions, see their destructive nature and generate an aspiration to tame them. Lama Kathy goes on to teach methods for tranforming mental afflictions beginning with a "slow reversal" practice that uses mindfulness to recognize and begin to work with mental afflictions. She then presents a "mind training" approach to working with mental afflictions, using compassion as an antidote for anger and other strong emotions. Finally, she discusses the application of insight meditation to transforming mental affictions. Throughout these teachings, Lama Kathy uses skillful explanation, wonderful anecdotes and humor to help her listeners understand the practices and process of transformation she is teaching.

Lama Kathy Wesley has been a student of Khenpo Karthar Rinpoche since 1977. She participated in the first three-year retreat at Karme-Ling Retreat Center, completing the retreat in 1996. She now serves the Columbus KTC as its resident teacher. Lama Kathy has taught regularly at Hartford KTC and other KTCs since ths fall of 1998. She is a delightful and warm person who teaches with clarity, compassion and humor.
