This stand-alone book is the final volume of a trilogy on Mind-Only that Hopkins composed over the last twenty-two years. Here Hopkins presents opinions on crucial issues from twenty-two commentaries on Dzong-ka-ba's The Essence of Eloquence, considered by his followers to be so challenging that it is called his steel bow and steel arrow, hard to pull but powerful when one succeeds. The careful and intense analysis with which these scholar-yogis probe these 170 issues over time opens a door into patterns of thought that constitute the environment of the text. Hopkins' lively style draws the reader into the drama, stimulating the reader's metaphysical imagination.

The Awakening Faith in the Mahayana is a classic of East Asian Buddhism. Its concept of faith, however, is not the same as that of Western religions. The book's title may also be translated as The Generating of Confidence in the Mahayana. Confidence or trust is generated as a result of examining the Mahayana Buddhist teachings, which are concisely summarized here. This book is said to have been written for those who find the wordiness of extensive discourse wearisome, and who prefer a brief treatise with a lot of meaning.

A compelling question for people of faith today is how to remain committed to one''s own religious tradition while being open to the beauty and truth of other religions. By example: Some fear that Buddhism is a threat to Western faith traditions and express grave doubts about interreligious and cross-cultural encounters. Yet, many who have actually broadened their experience profess to have developed a deeper understanding of and a deeper commitment to their tradition of origin.

Mr. Chandra B Shakya was born in a Newar family of Lalitpur, Nepal. Nurtured within religious and cultural background of a mix of different Buddhism practices, Mr Shakya has always been curious to have a better understanding of the different deities and masters relating to Mahayana Buddhism. Amidst the traditional and rich atmosphere of statues making and selling business especially in Lalitpur itself, he sensed a dearth of information in this aspect. Although, a water resource engineer by profession, he happened to devote his time and efforts in collecting information and studying about different deities and masters. There are so many different kinds of deities that one book is bound to get fascinated and bewildered at times. Through this book, Shakya has tried to cater to the readers some very pertinent and concise information about the most popular Mahayana
Buddhist deities and masters whose statues are being made. This book should be useful to many readers in terms of arousing curiosity as well as generating deeper interest to further the knowledge in Mahayana Buddhism and also instigate a desire to follow the path of Enlightenment ultimately in whatever form, the Tathagata Buddha had shown, in a way suitable to individual's preference.

Buddhist Scriptures as Literature By: Ralph Flores

Buddhist Scriptures as Literature explores the drama, lyricism, and compelling storylines in Buddhist sacred writings, while illustrating how rhetoric and ideology are at work in shaping readers’ reactions. Ralph Flores argues that the Buddha’s life story itself follows an archetypal quest-romance pattern: regal surroundings are abandoned and the ensuing feats are heroic. The story can be read as an epic, but it also has a comic plot: confusions and trials until the Prince becomes utterly selfless, having found his true element—nirvana. Making use of contemporary literary theory, Flores offers new readings of texts such as the Nikayas, the Dhammapada, the Heart Sutra, Zen koans, hantideva’s Way of the Bodhisattva, and the Tibetan Book of the Dead. Understanding these works as literature deepens our sense of the unfolding of their teachings, of their exuberant histories, and of their relevance for contemporary life.

Madhyamaka is a potent and universally accessible means of calming our suffering and awakening to our innate wisdom. The Center of the Sunlit Sky artfully rescues this brilliant teaching from its unwarranted reputation for intellectual opacity and reinstates it as a supremely practical toolkit for everyday living. The aim of this book is to take Madhyamaka out of the purely intellectual corner into which it -unjustly- gets boxed. It is an attempt to show Madhyamaka actually addresses and works with all of our experiences in life.

Dialogues on Universal Responsibility and Education is the result of two workshops held in New Delhi between His Holiness the XIV Dalai Lama and a group of Indian scholars, philosophers, teachers and social reformers. The concept of Universal Responsibility, which His Holiness the Dalai Lama often emphasises the need for in our world, itself arises out of ancient Indian philosophy. Taking this concept as their basis, the participants of the first workshop discuss ways in which we may all work to bring about humanitarian change in our society.

The doctrine of the two truths--conventional and ultimate--evolved as early Buddhists struggled to reconcile apparent contradictions within the collected sayings of the Buddha. Over time, the teachings on the two truths have taken their place at the heart of the Buddhist view of reality. Buddhist philosophers have made them central to the elaboration of an abhidharma, a "higher teaching" that explains how the mind apprehends and misapprehends the world. It is through the two truths that we understand how mind attaches itself to objects having no intrinsic existence, thereby creating suffering. Understood as a teaching on reality as opposed to merely a linguistic distinction, the doctrine played a key role for the followers of Mahayana in articulating the essential differences between their own view and what they called the Hinayana view-especially in defining the central ideas of selflessness and emptiness. Echoes from an Empty Sky, for the first time, eschews an exclusively Mahayana standpoint for the exploration of the two truths in order to examine the doctrine in the context of the Hinayana.

The Abhisamayalamkara summarizes all the topics in the vast body of the Perfection of Wisdom sutras. To understand this extraordinarily condensed text, it is necessary to have the assistance of reliable Indian and Tibetan commentaries. Together, they not only discuss the "hidden meaning" of the Perfection of Wisdom sutraspaths and groundsbut also serve as a basis for further reflection on the explicit topic of these sutrasthe principle of emptinessand how it is to be understood on the progressive levels of realization of bodhisattvas. Thus, these texts describe what happens in the mind of a bodhisattva who meditates on emptiness, making it a living experience from the beginner's stage up through buddhahood.
Gone Beyond contains the first in-depth study the Abhisamayalamkara (the text studied most extensively in higher Tibetan Buddhist education) and its commentaries in the Kagyu School. This study (in two volumes) includes translations of Maitreya's famous text and its commentary by the Fifth Shamarpa, Goncho Yenla (the first translation ever of a complete commentary on the Abhisamayalamkara into English), which are supplemented by extensive excerpts from the commentaries by the Third, Seventh, and Eighth Karmapas and others. Thus, it closes a long-standing gap in the modern scholarship on the Prajnaparamita Sutras and the literature on paths and bhumis in mahayana Buddhism.
The second volume presents an English translation of the final five chapters and its commentary by the Fifth Shamarpa.

High Road to China: George Bogle, the Panchen Lama, and the First British Expedition to Tibet By: Kate Teltscher

The High Road to China traces two extraordinary journeys across some of
the harshest and highest terrain in the world: the first British mission to
Tibet, and the Panchen Lama's state visit to China to mark the emperor's
seventieth birthday.
In the late eighteenth century, with its empire
expanding, the British sought a commercial opening to China, which was closed to
outsiders; and they saw a possible advocate with Peking in the Panchen Lama, the
spiritual leader of the Buddhist people of Tibet. The British envoy, a young
Scot named George Bogle, sought an opening to China through negotiations with
the Panchen Lama's envoy, a Hindu monk and trader, and then through the
incarnate deity himself. All the while, he kept a journal, in prose that is by
turns playful, self-deprecating, grandiose, and shrewd, and through his words
Kate Teltscher makes this meeting of two worlds palpably real to the reader.
The High Road to China brings the pleasures of narrative history to bear
on a crucial turning point in history, one whose effects are still being felt

Kimberly Snow offers an outrageously funny and honest account of her adventures as head cook at a Tibetan Buddhist Retreat center. With her earthy sensibility and sharp sense of humor, the author shows this world in a light devoid of preciousness - while expressing with heart the integrity of the spiritual work being undertaken. We come away from our visit to this exotic realm having found it both extraordinary and surprisingly familiar. The neuroses, obsessions, and petty concerns exposed by Snow - both in herself and her fellow staff members - prove to be grist for the mill for discovering the grace inherent in life just as it is.

A bestselling Buddhist philosopher offers a personal meditation of extraordinary insight. Whether we are religious or not, the Devil-evil incarnate-is a concept that can still strike fear in our hearts. What if he does exist? What if he is causing all our problems in his determination to keep us from reaching our full potential? Stephen Batchelor takes the concept of the Devil out of literature and history and brings him to life in his many forms and guises: the flatterer, the playmate, the caring friend, the stranger who offers rest and solace, the person who knows you best and shows you your greatness in the world.

Milarepa’s story was written in the twelfth century by his disciple Rechungpa in Tibet. There are several versions of it. All end with the scene of old Milarepa who summons his disciples at his death bed and addresses them with these words:
“Trust and pay attention to the law of karma that regulates causes and effects. Remember the impossibility to foresee our death and the punishments of the worldly life. Those who are full of worldly desires cannot do anything for other people’s sake and cannot be helpful even to themselves.
Since space is unlimited and creatures are innumerable, you will always have the chance to act to advantage of others, when you are in a position to do it. Start by occupying the last place, give up clothes, food and words. Load your bodies with hard work and your minds with duties.”
This biography of Milarepa is illustrated with drawings depicting various stages of his life.

Mindful Politics : A Buddhist Guide to Making the World a Better Place By: Melvin McLeod (Editor)

Just in time for the crucial 2006 Congressional elections, Mindful Politics goes beyond right and left to get to the heart of what matters, and how everyone can participate in real political change. Mindful Politics is not a typical political book. It's not written at fever pitch, it doesn’t employ the usual good vs. bad binary, it doesn't get hung up on specific issues or policies, and it's not even specifically "American." Instead, this timely book addresses the less-discussed but more important aspects of politics, such as whether religion — any religion, including Buddhism — has something to offer politics. It also discusses how dealing with emotional issues can help the activist move beyond the particulars of legislation and policy, so that personal growth and effective advocacy can occur together. Noted editor Melvin McLeod offers a brief, contextualizing introduction for each of these essays.

Minding What Matters: Psychotherapy and the Buddha Within By: Robert Langan

"Minding What Matters could be considered part of a new genre, the "literary self-help" book. Echoing the style of Kundera and the insights of Jung, with dashes of "The God of Small Things and "Thoughts Without a Thinker, this timely book alternates between discursive sections on Buddhist topics and engrossing fictional scenes between a psychotherapist and a patient. Sometimes going so far as to directly address the reader, the book shows how anyone can intimately explore their mind. By encouraging readers to create a state of inquiry and allowing them to put themselves into hypothetical situations -- such as participating in therapy or engaging in Buddhist practices -- the book shows how to discover inner thoughts and act on them in positive ways. At once informative and evocative, "Minding What Matters offers an entrancing vision of, in Robert Coles's words, "what it is possible to do and to be."

Isolated for centuries behind the Himalayas in Tibet is a mysterious and mythical mountain, Mount Kailash, standing 6714m (22,028ft) high. The mountain has for more than a thousand years been a central pilgrimage site for some of the world’s major religions.
This trek leads around the sacred peak in 3 to 4 days, following the pilgrims’ route. Though short, this high-altitude trek is not to be undertaken lightly – Mount Kailash remains isolated and remote, and getting there is an epic journey in itself.
Also included in the guide is a visit to the lost kingdom of Guge, still almost unknown in the west. The ethereal ruined fortress of Tsaparang, Guge’s former capital, is Tibet’s greatest Buddhist treasure-house of art and paintings – a stunning location not to be missed.
* The Kailash trek, and other treks in the region, described in detail * Extensive practical information for planning and preparation * The key approach routes (by foot and road) and return route to Kathmandu or Lhasa * Historical, cultural and religious background information

Dharmakirti, an Indian Buddhist philosopher of the seventh century, explored the nature, limits and justifications of rationality within the context of Buddhist religious and metaphysical concerns. While Dharmakirti is widely recognized for his crucial innovations in Indian logic and semantic theory, his notoriously difficult thought nonetheless remains poorly understood. In this volume, one of the world's leading scholars of Buddhist philosophy sheds light on the interrelated topics of scripture, logic and language in the works of Dharmakirti and his philosophical heirs, both Indian and Tibetan. Professor Tillemans' knowledgable explanations of such technical subjects as the "apoha" theory of reference and the problem of entailment (vyapti) are coupled throughout with insightful reflections on how best to evaluate Dharmakirti's theories in light of contemporary philosophical thought. "Scripture, Logic, Language" is an informative and thought-provoking study for students of Buddhism as well as for those in the wider field of philosophy.

She Still Lives: A Novel of Tibet is an action-love story set in a fictional Tibet of the future. The beginning of the next century is a pivotal time for the Land of Snows. A nascent freedom movement has been crushed by the Communists. Tara Gyatso, beloved Dalai Lama, and her advisor Mila Lakpa, have been imprisoned.
Many years later Mila Lakpa emerges from jail. He is an aged remnant of his former self, but he rallies for a final act of rebellion. Outwardly he may appear to have forgotten the Dalai Lama, but inwardly a secret plan is taking shape. The path to success is a razor's edge: on the one side, the Dalai Lama's freedom; on the other, a life sentence and the annihilation of his hopes. The Chinese believe he poses no danger to the State. For all Mila knows, they may be right.

The intimate photographs in this volume magnificently celebrate Tibet's ethnic nomads, a displaced, endangered civilization of wisdom and beauty. Stark, stunning landscapes, fortress-like monasteries on high slopes and a bitterly cold winter climate form the magnificent setting for the extravagant fashions worn by the nomadic tribes that inhabit the region. Bearing all the wealth, pride, and honor they have inherited from their ancestors, their finery includes one-armed fur-lined coats, extravagant beaded necklaces, brightly colored fabrics with simple geometric patterns, chased silver jewels studded with semi-precious stones, silk brocade, and scarlet pulu robes laden with coral and silver jewelry. Their sophisticated sense of elegance is unrivaled and their special art of freedom and exuberance opens a new dimension to our traditional notions of Tibetan culture. The surprising originality and trend-inspiring nature of these photographs make this an idea source for fashion and interior designers alike, as well as a celebration of Tibetan culture.

During his travels in Tibet, he collected thousands of images of the country and the people that had captured both his imagination and his soul. Visions of Tibet displays a captivating selection of these photographs, conveying Kistler's spiritual journey from his initial visual fascination with the mountainous landscape, through his growing familiarity with the Tibetan people to his eventual spiritual enlightenment. He became a pilgrim of art, nature, culture and landscape, documenting the holy places he visited along the way and the extraordinary Tibetan people that have overcome decades of invasion, occupation, violent revolution and colonial repression with indomitable spirit. This collection of images is a homage to this beautiful country and the spiritual life with which Kistler made a lifelong connection.

One of the great classics of Buddhist literature, the Bodhicharyavatara, or Way of the Bodhisattva, is required reading for understanding Tibetan Buddhism. His Holiness the Dalai Lama considers it a seminal influence in his life and work and repeatedly stresses the benefits of its study. Presented in the form of a personal meditation in verse, it outlines the path of the bodhisattvas--those who renounce the peace of their own salvation, vowing instead to attain enlightenment for the sake of all others. The Way of Awakening is without question the most comprehensive single commentary on this text available. Expounded by an accomplished scholar and deeply realized meditator, it is a resource for a lifetime of study. Chapter by chapter and verse by verse, it maps the Bodhicharyavatara, helping us to deepen our understanding of its teachings and apply them to our lives.

His Holiness the Dalai Lama is an extraordinary example of a life dedicated to peace, communication, and unity. What he represents, and what he has accomplished, heals and transcends the current tensions between Tibet and China. Why the Dalai Lama Matters explores just why he has earned the world's love and respect, and how restoring Tibet's autonomy within China is not only possible, but highly reasonable, and absolutely necessary for all of us together to have a peaceful future as a global community.
In the few decades since the illegal Chinese invasion of Tibet, Tibetans have seen their ecosystem destroyed, their religion, language, and culture repressed, and systematic oppression and violence against anyone who dares acknowledge Tibetan sovereignty. Yet, above it all, the Dalai Lama has been a consistent voice for peace, sharing a "Middle-Way" approach that has gathered accolades from the Nobel Peace Prize to the U.S. Congressional Gold Medal.
Modeling this peaceful resistance shows the world that nobody is free unless everybody is free -- and that a solution exists that can benefi t all parties, not just one. And more than just his nation have taken notice. His inter-religious dialogues, honest, humble demeanor, and sense of compassionate justice sets him apart in a world at war with itself. When China changes policy and lets Tibetans be who they are, Tibet can, in turn, join with China in peaceful coexistence.
Why the Dalai Lama Matters is not merely a book about Tibet or the Dalai Lama. It is a revealing, provocative solution for a world in confl ict, dealing with the very fundamentals of human rights and freedoms. By showing the work that the Dalai Lama has done on behalf of his people, Thurman illuminates a worldwide call to action, showing that power gained by might means nothing in the face of a determined act of truth.

Filling a gap in the literature, this volume explores the struggles and accomplishments of women from both past and present-day Tibet. Here are queens from the imperial period, yoginis and religious teachers of medieval times, Buddhist nuns, oracles, political workers, medical doctors, and performing artists. Most of the essays focus on the lives of individual women, whether from textual sources or from anthropological data, and show that Tibetan women have apparently enjoyed more freedom than women in many other Asian countries.
