Amrapali: Chosen by Buddha

Our Price: $3.30 Members Price: $2.97

|

This collection of Buddhist tales tell of Amrapali, an accomplished dancer who commanded the love and admiration of an entire town and of Upagupta, who was just a poor monk. Amrapali craved peace; Upagupta's bearing exuded contentment. Amrapali depended on the adulation of her audience; Upagupta spurned the attentions of the rich and famous. Their stories were different, but the Buddha's wise teachings linked their lives - and the lessons to be learned from them.
Lord Buddha attached more importance to the emancipation of the masses than to the salvation of the individual. His concern for the masses manifested itself in the establishment of the Sangha, which could be best described as an association of seekers.
Amrapali and Vasavadatta were two women disciples of Lord Buddha who gave up a life of pleasure and took to asceticism. At first women were not admitted to his order by Lord Buddha, but when Ananda, his favorite disciple, pleaded on their behalf, he relented.
The story of Amrapali is told in the Maha-Parinibbana Sutta and in Malasarvastivadas. The garden which Amrapali gave up to Lord Buddha was still in existence when Fa-Hein visited India during the Gupta age.
Upagupta was a disciple of Buddha. For him, ahimsa (non-violence) did not merely mean desisting from violence but doing positive good and showing compassion. When Vasavadatta was shunned by society and had nowhere to go, Upagupta took her to his hermitage.
While adapting this story for our Amar Chitra Katha, we have omitted a few gruesome details.

The man we call the Buddha was born as Siddhartha in Nepal around 563 b.c. to the king and queen of Shakya. After his birth, a great seer decreed that the baby would be holy, and early on Siddhartha exhibited great intelligence and empathy. His father wanted him to become king, not a holy man, but Siddhartha was not satisfied by his pampered life, and was moved by the hardships of the commoners. Despite his father's wishes, Siddhartha ultimately left behind his kingdom and all his worldly possessions in his search for enlightenment.
This biography focuses on the childhood of the Buddha: a man with a fascinating history and an enormous contemporary following.

Around the beginning of the common era, Indian Buddhists began to collect fables, or jataka tales, illuminating various human virtues and foiblesùfrom kindness, cooperation, loyalty and self-discipline on the one hand to greed, pride, foolishness, and treachery on the other. Instead of populating these stories with people, they cast the animals of their immediate environment in the leading rolesùwhich may have given the tales a universal appeal that helped them travel around the world, surfacing in the Middle East as 'sop's fables and in various other guises throughout East and Southeast Asia, Africa, Russia, and Europe.

A colorful introduction to Buddhist fables
A monkey, caught in a monsoon, finds shelter in a cave amid the rubble of a temple. The monkey is not alone. A lion, a jackal, a turtle, and a dove bicker in the cramped space, until a statue of Buddha comes to life. "Hush, children, hush." Buddha says. "I will tell you a story to pass the time." From the tale of the clever monkey outwidding a hungry crocodile to that of a bird and turtle rescuing a friend, the six amusing parables told by the Buddha will introduce young readers to the famous cycle of fables in Buddhist literature known as the Jatakas, or birth stories, which Buddha originally told to his disciples to illustrate his teachings. Joined with stunning linocut illustrations, Jeanne M. Lee's retellings form a book notable for both its beauty and its wisdom.

‘Neither Night nor Day’ is the magical tale of a Tibetan boy who sets out on a journey in search of a cure for his ailing mother. Travelling across vast upland plateaus, over rivers and dangerous high Himalayan passes, he encounters a succession of lamas, magicians, strange yogis, yoginis and animal guides, who help and give him advice along the way. The setting and culture of the story is primarily Tibetan but there is enough ambivalence in the telling to give it relevance to any child in any culture whose imagination has the freedom to penetrate the apparently concrete fabric of existence.
Written with descriptive colour and humour, the book is also illustrated by the author’s own extraordinary art work, full of charm and completely authentic Tibetan cultural details. The paintings are an integral part of the story and conspire to usher a reader into the magical ambience of the tale.

Pramana: Dharmakirti and the Indian Philosophical Debate

Our Price: $16.50 Members Price: $14.85

|

Indian Philosophical thought on Pramana (Valid Cognition) is a rich archive that merits attention not only for its Technical brilliance and variety but also for the Ways in which it reverberates with contemporary discussions in science: arguably the 'master discourse' of the modern world. In a spirit of free and open enquiry, characteristic of His Holiness the Dalai Lama's preferred mode of engaging with the world, Tibet House collaborated with the Drepung Monastic University at Mundgod, Karnataka, to organize a Monastic Debate that was both traditional and contemporary.
Tibetan Buddhism has a long Tradition of Monastic Debates. This Debate was special in that it drew upon the pre-Buddhist Traditions of thought on this crucial question in Logic while also incorporating a perspective that leapt across the centuries : that of contemporary Physics. While the different Schools such as Vedanta, Sankhya, Nyayavaisesika, Purvamimamsa, and Jaina were represented by scholars from academia, there was a lively interaction with Monks being trained in traditional Tibetan Philosophy at monasteries across India.
The seminar was multilingual - with presentations and queries in Tibetan, Hindi, Sanskrit and English. While this book presents lightly edited versions of the key papers presented there, the lively debates in Tibetan could not be transcribed due to logistical difficulties. Hence, this bi-lingual volume, attempts to make available to the scholarly community and curious students a valuable resource for understanding this crucial issue in Logic from a rich, multifaceted, comparatist perspective.
