Naropa's biography , translated by the world-renowned Buddhist scholar Herbert V. Guenther from hitherto unknown sources, describes with great psychological insight the spiritual development of this scholar-saint. It is unique in that it also contains a detailed analysis of his teaching that has been authoritative for the whole of Tantric Buddhism.

The fascinating new book Naropa explains the underlying philosophy of Buddhism and its relevance today as a religion without a god or prophet, but rather a belief in self-reliance. The story takes place in the eleventh century, when India was subject to Turkish Muslim attack on the Indian Gangetic plain, in Kashmir, and in the Himalayan region.

Naropa is a Kashmir Brahmin and the abbot of Nalanda University. During a strange mystical experience, a hideous dakini informs him that his comprehension is only intellectual, and if he wants real insight, he should meet Tilopa.

Following this advice, Naropa abandons his university post and searches for the Mahasiddha Tilopa. It is not easy to find the Brahmin Tilopa, as he possesses miraculous powers, and never stays long in the same place. But Naropa finally locates him.

After twelve years of arduous training, Naropa gains Enlightenment, and in turn, imparts his transcendent wisdom to Marpa, the Tibetan. Though Nalanda, Vikramashila, and other Buddhist monasteries are destroyed in the Turkish Islamic invasion, Naropa's teachings survive in the Tibetan translations made by Marpa, Milarepa, and Gampopa.

In the past fifty years, these teachings have reached a world-wide audience in Nepal, India, the United States, Canada and Britain.

The Tibetan tradition known as the Six Yogas of Naropa is one of the most popular tantric systems with all schools of Tibetan Buddhism. Structured and arranged by the eleventh-century Indian masters Tilopa and Naropa from various Buddhist tantric legacies, this system of yogic practice was carried to Tibet by Marpa the Translator a generation later. These "six yogas" - inner heat, illusory body, clear light, consciousness transference, forceful projection and bardo yoga - continue to be one of the most important living meditation traditions in the Land of Snow.
This collection of readings on the six yogas contains important texts on this esoteric doctrine, including original Indian works by Tilopa and Naropa, and Tibetan writings by Tsongkhapa the Great, Gyalwa Wensapa, the First Panchen Lama and Lama Jey Sherab Gyatso. Readings discusses the practices, their context and the historical continuity of this most important tradition, which is said to bring full enlightenment in one lifetime.

Tsongkhapa's discussion of the Six Yogas is regarded as one of the finest on the subject to come out of Tibet. His treatise has served as the fundamental guide to the system as practiced in more than three thousand Gelukpa monasteries, nunneries and hermitages across Central Asia over the past five and half centuries.
Songs of Naropa

This translation contains subtle and penetrating wisdom expressed through the age-old tradition of spiritual songs. Two songs by the great Indian master Naropa are explained in detail by Thrangu Rinpoche, a realized Tibetan Buddhist teacher of the present time.
"The basic nature is in itself the state of realization of all buddhas. To fully awaken to this natural state, it is not necessary to go some other place to reach enlightenment. The state of enlightenment is not extrinsic to ourselves. Buddhahood is not something that will appear suddenly in the future, but exists inherently within ourselves right now."
