This book is primarily about buddha nature--called dharmadhatu
here--the potential in all living beings to awaken to their mind's
primordial true nature, thus freeing themselves and others from
suffering. The great Buddhist master Na-ga-rjuna shows how buddha
nature exists in all beings, is temporarily obscured, and can be
revealed in its full bloom. The emphasis is on the actual experience of
mind's vivid wakefulness.
The themes of this text are brought to
a deeper level by the inclusion of a translation of its earliest, most
extensive commentary by the Third Karmapa, Rangjung Dorje (1284-1339).
His distinct positions on buddha nature and the transformation of
consciousness into enlightened wisdom also serve as the fundamental
view for the entire vajrayana as understood and practiced in the Kagyu
tradition to the present day.

Karmapa the Sacred Prophecy -While visiting Karma Monastery in Nangchen, Eastern Tibet, the great nineteenth century master Chogyur Dechen Lingpa was granted a prophetic vision of twenty-one incarnations of Karmapa, the supreme head of the Kagyu lineage of Tibetan Buddhism. Chogyur Lingpa described his vision in detail to Karmai Khenchen Rinchen Tarjay, Supreme Abbot of Karma Monastery, who painted a representation of the prophecy on silk. Disciples of Chogjur Lingpa committed his oral description of the vision to writing, in a text later printed in woodblock at the renowned monastery of Mindroling.

The Third Karmapa, Rangjung Dorje (1284–1339), propounded a unique synthesis of Yogacara, Madhyamaka, and the classical teachings on buddha nature. His work occupies an important position between its Indian predecessors and the later, often highly charged, debates in Tibet about rangtong ("self-emptiness") and shentong ("other-emptiness"). The Third Karmapa is widely renowned as one of the major proponents of the Tibetan shentong tradition. This book contains a collection of some of his main writings on buddha nature; the transition of ordinary deluded consciousness to enlightened wisdom; and the characteristics of buddhahood.
Though relying strictly on classical Indian sources, the Karmapa's texts are not mere scholarly documents. Their topics and styles bear great significance for practicing the sutrayana and the vajrayana as understood in the Kagyü tradition to the present day, thus making what is described in these texts a living experience.

On Buddha Essence, A Commentary on Ranjung Dorje's Treatise By: Thrangu Rinpoche

|
Our Price: $29.95 Members Price: $26.96
|
|
|

A Treatise on Buddha Nature by Rangjung Dorje, the third Karmapa, is one of the Kagyu lineage's oldest and most important texts, belonging to the tradition of the Six Yogas of Naropa. In the nineteenth century Jamgon Kongtrul composed a commmentary on it, which Khenchen Thrangu uses as the basis for the teachings in this book. The subject of this famous treatise is buddha essence, the basic nature of all beings. The term is a translation of the Sanskrit tathagatagarbha, deshek nyingpo (bde-gshegs snying-po) in Tibetan. The Tibetan interprets garbha as "essence" (nying-po), the innermost part of something. Both terms indicate that our very nature is buddhahood - buddha essence is possessed not only by enlightened masters, but by everyone.
The path to awakening buddha essence, or buddha nature, is meditation. The practitioner needs to understand not only how to meditate, but also the reasons for meditation, in order to develop insight. This text contains complete instructions on how to discover buddha essence in ourselves.
