“The Buddha was as mortal as you and I, yet he attained enlightenment and was raised to the rank of an immortal. The miracle is that he got there following a heart as human as yours and mine, and just as vulnerable.” - from the Introduction Bestselling author Deepak Chopra brings the Buddha back to life in this gripping account of the young prince who abandoned his inheritance to discover his true calling. This iconic journey changed the world forever, and the truths revealed continue to influence every corner of the globe today. A young man in line for the throne is trapped in his father’s kingdom and yearns for the outside world. Betrayed by those closest to him, Siddhartha abandons his palace and princely title. Finally alone and face-to-face with his demons, he becomes a wandering monk and embarks on a spiritual fast that carries him to the brink of death. Ultimately recognizing his inability to conquer his body and mind by sheer force, Siddhartha transcends his physical pain and achieves enlightenment. Although we recognize Buddha today as an icon of peace and serenity, his life story was a tumultuous and spellbinding affair filled with love and sex, murder and loss, struggle and surrender. From the rocky terrain of the material world to the summit of the spiritual one, Buddha entertains and inspires - ultimately leading us closer to understanding the true nature of life and ourselves.

Distinction Between Consciousness and Wisdom (MP3 CD) By: Karl Brunnholzl
Our Price: $30.00 Members Price: $27.00

In his text The Distinction Between Consiousness and Wisdom the Third Karmapa Rangjung Dorje distinguishes between the two on the basis of the yogachara view and his own practice experience. From the yogacara perspective, the eight consciousnesses are eight forms of confusion and the five wisdoms are their enlightened nature. Khenchen Thrangu Rinpoche has said that understanding the distinction between consciousness and wisdom is important for mahamudra practice. Khenpo Karl Brunnholzl provides clear and engaging line-by-line commentary on this text, which begins by explaining that the fundamental difference between the mind of confused sentient beings and the mind of the Buddha is recognizing or not recognizing minds true nature. The text then presents and refutes the essential components of theories that posit substantial existence (arises from self; arises from something else; arises from self and other; arises without cause). Following this introduction, the text explains the eight consciousnesses as they are experienced by deluded mind. Khenpo Karls teaching on these sections of the text (Talks 2 4) takes the form of a lively and wide ranging discussion with the students in attendance. The text together with Khenpo Karls explanation provides a profound view of the eight consciousnesses, which is then further clarified in response to insightful questions from the audience. Khenpo Karls broad ranging study and practice informs his answers resulting in a presentation that is highly educational even for students who have studied the eight consciousnesses in other contexts. In the final talk, Khenpo Karl teaches the verses in the text that explain the wisdom nature of the conciousnesses. The distinction taught in this teaching is not simply of academic interest. This distinction is important to understand to inform our practice. This teaching is so rich with information and insight that practitioners will want to view it more than once.

Tibetans call their cherished tradition of Buddhism a "wish-fulfilling jewej tree" for its power to generate bliss and enlightenment within all who absorb its teachings. Few teachers in the West possess both the spiritual training and the scholarship to lead us into the deeper mysteries - and rewards - of this spiritual tradition. Robert Thurman is one such teacher. As a soul-searching youth in the 1960s, Thurman journeyed to Dharamsala to become the first Westerner ordained by His Holiness the Dalai Lama himself - and gained the rare privilage of experiencing Tibet's wondrous spiritual world first-hand with some of the great enlightened masters of our time. Now, with The Jewel Tree of Tibet, Robert Thurman shares these wisdom teachings, in his first audio-learning course on the essetials of Tibetan Buddhism.

Liberation upon Hearing in the Between, CD By: Robert Thurman

Our Price: $29.95 Members Price: $26.96

One of the 25 most influential people in America according to Time Magazine, and Òthe leading American expert on Tibetan BuddhismÓ (The New York Times), Robert Thurman illuminates The Tibetan Book of the Dead with up-to-date insights for modern audiences. For centuries, this text has been read aloud to the dyingÑwho Buddhist masters say are capable of hearing up to three days after clinical deathÑas a guide through the tumultuous and often terrifying process of dissolution. Now, in Liberation Upon Hearing in the Between, Professor Robert Thurman demystifies this esoteric teaching and reveals the Tibetan view of dying: it is not an ending to be feared, but a wondrous and liberating culmination of our lifeÕs journey, potentially opening into glorious new beginnings. Entering the bardoÑthe in-between state in which one reality dissolves and the next has not yet formedÑwe need not become prey to our fears and hopes. Instead we can relax into our natural clarity and stabilize the journey. And, this treasured teaching is for much more than just changing our understanding of death. Whether we have lost a dear relationship, awoken from a dream, or face the loss of our bodied life, simply hearing these teachings steadies our minds and hearts so that the journey from one state to the next changes from a tragic voyage into a clear adventure through the brilliant sky of great liberation.

Inner Splendor presents the first of a series of Guided Buddhist Meditation albums with Dr. Miles Neale, a contemplative psychotherapist and expert on the psychology of meditation. In Mindfulness Meditations for Tranquility and Insight, Dr. Neale introduces the ancient Buddhist practice of mindfulness, used for over millennia to refine awareness and foster introspective learning. Mindfulness has two aims: first, to calm and center the mind from its usual state of distraction and dullness; and second, to develop self-reflective knowledge of negative mental habits including obsession, repulsion and misperception. It is this powerful combination of wakeful tranquility and contemplative insight that leads to lasting freedom and happiness.
For those eager to begin a meditation practice of their own, Track 1 offers clear and concise instructions on how to set up and maintain a meditation practice at home. Tracks 2 and 3 provide guided meditations of mindfulness of breathing in brief and longer versions respectively. Track 4 provides ways of transforming difficulties encountered during mindfulness into opportunities for deepening one's practice. Finally, Track 5 offers a guided meditation on the traditional Buddhist framework of the "Four Applications of Mindfulness", to help students further refine the flexibility and precision of their awareness and arrive at new realizations about their own mental processes.
This new and exciting album represents years of Dr. Neale's investigation into meditation and psychotherapy and promises to be an important learning tool for those interested in discovering for themselves the transformative power of mindfulness meditation.
