Robert Ford was born in England in 1923. He left school at the outbreak of the war and joined the Royal Air Force. After signals training and service in England, he was sent in 1943 to India as Radio Instructor. From May to October, 1945, he was the Radio Officer with the British Mission in Lhasa. Early in 1948 he returned to Tibet as an official of the Tibetan government to set up a radio network. After his capture by the Chinese Communists and his eventual release, Mr. Ford returned to the quiet English village of Rolleston-on-Dove. There he married a childhood friend, Miss Monica Tebbett.
