Throughout Himalayan Nepal one finds an abundant array of ritual expressions reflecting multiple Hindu, Buddhist, and indigenous forms. Lamas, Brahmans, shamans, sacrificers, monks, nuns, tantrics, ascetic mendicants, and other ritualists practice in innumerable temples, houses, fields, and forests, at crude and elaborate altars, at all social gatherings, at remote peaks and high lakes, in river valleys, along trails, and in bazaars. This book examines the ritual life of a community of western Tamang in sociological and historical perspective and compares Tamang culture with other cultures in the Hindu and Buddhist world.
