A former capital of the Indian kingdom Magadha. At the time of Buddha Shakyamuni the king Bimbisara ruled this kingdom. He became a follower of the Buddha and offered him the Veluvana Bamboo Grove, which became the first property of the sangha. It was also here that Sariputra and Maudgalyayana became members of the sangha.
