Amrita of Eloquence is a luminous portrait of the life of Khenpo Karthar Rinpoche, one of the Kagyu lineage's most beloved and revered teachers. Beautifully written by Lama Karma Drodul (Rinpoche's nephew and disciple) and elegantly translated by Yeshe Gyamtso, Amrita of Eloquence describes Khenpo Rinpoche and his life with humor, lyrical beauty, and boundless affection. The book composed in the traditional style of Tibetan spiritual biographies, but is nonetheless completely accessible to modern readers. The importance of such biographies cannot be overestimated: studying the life of one's guru brings devotion, and devotion brings awakening.

Born in eastern Tibet in 1924, Khenpo Karthar Rinpoche is one of the great masters of the Karma Kagyu tradition. Rinpoche, who received most of his training and education in Tibet before the Chinese invasion, is highly accomplished in meditation, philosophy, and monastic arts. As abbot of Karma Triyana Dharmachakra Monastery (KTD) in Woodstock, New York; spiritual guide of thirty-five Karma Thegsum Choling (KTC) affiliate centers; and retreat master at the Karme Ling Retreat Center in Delhi, New York, Rinpoche has touched the lives of thousands of students. He is also known for numerous books, including The Quintessence of the Union of Mahamudra and Dzokchen; Dharma Paths; Instructions of Gampopa; Bardo: Interval of Possibility, The Wish-Fulfilling Wheel: The Practice of White Tara; and the five-volume masterwork Karma Chakme's Mountain Dharma.

"You light the beacon of dharma in a land where it was previously absent.
You bring happiness to the minds of all kinds of beings.
You are always on the path of nonviolence, peace, and happiness.
Holy being with flawless morality, I pray that you remain."

Supplication written by His Holiness the Seventeenth Karmapa, Ogyen Trinley Dorje, for the long life of Khenpo Karthar Rinpoche

Foreword by Karmapa Ogyen Trinley Dorje

The price of living a long life in this world of ours is our duty to be able to offer some contribution to everyone's welfare. Based on the intentions of the previous Gyalwang Karmapa, Khenpo Karthar Rinpoche has for many years engaged in extraordinary efforts to spread Buddhism throughout many countries in the East and West. Since by doing so he has truly caused the present and future happiness of many beings, he is worthy of praise. Karma Drodul's written description of Khenpo Rinpoche's deeds is based on factual accounts of the events described. This is definitely a significant contribution to our resources for the increase of goodness and the prevention of wrongdoing. I therefore rejoice in this, and make the aspiration that every aspect of goodness may increase like the waxing moon.

Written by Karmapa Ogyen Trinley Dorje on December 26th, 2008, in the Buddhist Year 2552.

This biography of the great teacher and spiritual guide Khenpo Karthar
Rinpoche was written by his nephew and attendant Lama Karma Drodul. It
is presented in an extremely readable and easy to understand style,
thanks in part to both the straightforward writing of Karma Drodul and
also the superb skills of Yeshe Gyamtso, who translated this book from
Tibetan into English.

This book covers the entirety and auspiciousness of Rinpoche's life
thus far, from the details of his birthplace and family, to his
entering the monastic life and serving both Thrangu Monastery and His
Holiness the Gyalwang Karmapa, to his tireless work in America,
founding Karma Triyana Dharmachakra and traveling throughout this
country establishing centers and placing Western students on the path
of Dharma.

This is a book for the student of any level of practice. KTD
Publications has painstakingly included many sidenotes to this
biography, explaining even the simplest of Dharma terms, so that even a
beginner can read and enjoy this book without confusion or
misunderstanding.

Anyone who has ever seen Khenpo Karthar Rinpoche, or even heard his
name, will benefit from reading this book. It is a true work of love
and devotion for this glorious teacher, who still resides in New York
and teaches to this day. It is also a unique history of His Holiness
the Gyalwang Karmapa's vision of bringing Dharma to the West. I highly
recommend this book to anyone who wants to read about the inspiring
life of a man whose devotion led him to offer so much to the world.
