Andras played a remarkable role in the development of Buddhiam and its geographical expansion. This study attempts to give a comprehensive account of the emergence and growth of the Mahayana in Andradesa. It makes exensive use of original literary sources as well as archaeological evidences to show that Andhradesa is the original home of Mahayana Buddhism. Short biographical sketches of the well-known Mahayano philosophers and logicians from Andra such as Acarya Nagarjuna, Aryadeva Buddhapalita, Bhavaviveka, Dijana and Dharmakirti have been out lined. The impact of Mahayana Buddhism on Andra Culture and society is also examined. It traces the history of the early Andhaka school including its component sects, which were foundational and paved the way for Mahayana subsequently.
