Description

Kambala's Alokamala

Christian Lindtner has done students of Buddhism a tremendous service by making the work of Kambala available for the first time in translation. It takes extensive study of the literature available at present to realize the complexity of the philosophical positions available to Buddhists during the period between, say, the time of Vasubandhu and that of Candrakirti and Dharmakirti.

Kambala's unique position can best be seen, perhaps, as the midway point in a series of positions taken by philosophers of the fifth and sixth centuries, the other positions in the series illustrated by Buddhapalita, Bhavya, Dharmapala and Dignaga. All five agree on many fundamental Buddhist theses, e.g., that all factors (if there are any) are causally conditioned, possibly excepting space and liberation itself.

For Kambala both perfected and dependent natures are real, though neither one available through positive language; thus there are no aspects (all aspects belong to the constructed nature), but consciousness is real (though not to be confused with its grasping aspect). --- from Forward by Karl W. Potter
