By: Traleg Rinpoche
Our Price: $19.95
Members Price: $17.96

Gampopa's Four Dharmas is closely related to his Jewel Ornament of Liberation, a text that deals with the stages in our spiritual development. First you begin to discover the Dharma, then you make a good job of it, then the Dharma becomes applicable on the path so you begin to clarify confusion on the path, and finally you transmute that confusion into wisdom. Those are the four Dharmas and they really relate to the development of the individual on the path.

Gampopa previously lived as a Bodhisattva renowned for herbal healing abilities during the time of Shakyamuni Buddha, who predicted this rebirth.

One of the shining jewels of the Kagyu lineage is the Dharma Lord Gampopa (1079-1153). Among many great accomplishments Gampopa is particularly well known for the merging into one river the Kadampa lineage with the Mahamudra lineage he received from his root teacher Milarepa. The Jewel Ornament of Liberation, a text on the graded path and of the sutra tradition, represents the blending of these two traditions and is thus a primary text for all Kagyu students.

To read spiritual biographies of the Kagyu lineage masters is a great inspiration to enter the path and also provides encouragement and enthusiasm to continue when circumstances become difficult. The spiritual biography of Gampopa, covered in the first half of this book, is a very good example of avoiding the extremes in practice and of showing how we should correctly practice. Gampopa was the main disciple of Milarepa and one of the founders and shining jewels of the Kagyu lineage of Tibetan Buddhism from which originate the four greater and eight lesser schools.

There is a formal, precise sequence of contemplations and practices within all of the four major lineages of Vajrayana Buddhism, usually referred to as the graduated path. Although it has different names in each lineage - Lam rim, Path and Fruition, Words of my Perfect Teacher, and The Jewel Ornament of Liberation - this path incorporates the same sequence. All the paths begin with the contemplation on the four thoughts that turn the mind, then bodhichitta, then the meditation on the yidam deity, then a meditation on devotion to the guru, then the ultimate truth, Mahamudra, and finally the dedication.
