Tsongkhapa (1357-1419), the author of The Great Treatise on the Stages of the Path to Enlightenment and the teacher of the First Dalai Lama, is renowned as one of the greatest scholar-saints that Tibet has ever produced. He composed his poetic Praise for Dependent Relativity the very morning that he abandoned confusion and attained the final view, the clear realization of emptiness that is the essence of wisdom. English monk Graham Woodhouse, a longtime student of Buddhism who lives near the Dalai Lamas residence in northern India, translates Tsongkhapas celebrated text and conveys for modern readers the teachings he received from his teacher, the late Venerable Losang Gyatso.

Too often compassionate feeling is left inactive. Compassion NOW! is a work not only focused on how love and compassion are the root of all Buddhist practices, but is a call to put these compassionate feelings into action in the world. From a teaching given in India in 2010, His Holiness the Seventeenth Karmapa sets forth that compassion for oneself is the starting point from which we can expand to other beings with whom we have a close connection and then further to an immeasurable compassion for all beings through the Mahayana practice of mind training, which he discusses with clarity and insight. An overview of the Vajrayana method of meditation on Chenrezik, the bodhisattva of compassion, also is included, where His Holiness guides our attention to the central role of the practice: cultivating compassion.

A stirring call to move beyond religion for the guidance to improve human life on individual, community, and global levels including a guided meditation practice for cultivating key human values
Ten years ago, in his best-selling Ethics for a New Millennium, His Holiness the Dalai Lama first proposed an approach to ethics based on universal rather than religious principles. Now, in Beyond Religion, the Dalai Lama, at his most compassionate and outspoken, elaborates and deepens his vision for the nonreligious way. Transcending the mere "religion wars," he outlines a system of secular ethics that gives tolerant respect to religion those that ground ethics in a belief in God and an afterlife, and those that understand good actions as leading to better states of existence in future lives. And yet, with the highest level of spiritual and intellectual authority, the Dalai Lama makes a claim for what he calls a third way. This is a system of secular ethics that transcends religion as a way to recognize our common humanity and so contributes to a global human community based on understanding and mutual respect.

A unique and interesting look at how Yogacara philosophy influenced the development of tantra and Mahamudra. Developed by Asanga and Vasubandhu as a reaction to over theorization, Yogacara emphasizes individual experience and practice.
Excerpt. We are going to be talking about Yogacara philosophy's relationship to Buddhist tantra. People have generally ignored how Yogacara philosophy influenced Buddhist tantra and its development. It is not discussed explicitly, even though it's quite patent in the writings of Buddhist tantra. You could trace different notions discussed in the tantric literatures back to Yogacara philosophy. Yogacara philosophy itself developed as a reaction against too much theorisation and came to emphasise individual experience and practice, hence the name "Yogacara", meaning practitioners of yoga. Yoga here doesn't mean twiddling with your toes, but meditation. So Yogacara, practitioners of yoga, meaning meditators. Yogacara as a system was developed by two brothers known as Asanga and Vasubandhu. They developed the philosophy in such a way that everything came back to one's practice. one's experience. You could not theorise about Yogacara philosophy without meditating. In fact, you could not be a Yogacara philosopher unless you meditate. When you look at the writings of Yogacara philosophy, you discover many tantric concepts mentioned either implicitly or explicitly. There are certain crucial concepts that both Yogacara philosophy and Buddhist tantra share, concepts such as transforming unhealthy or unwholesome psychological aspects of oneself into something higher. In other words, all our negativities - emotions such as passion, aggression, ignorance, stupidity, confusion, whatever they may be - are not perceived as being something that should be dispensed with, as much as transformed or mutated. The nature of one's psychological makeup is not altered, but the way the negativities manifest becomes totally different. That is a very important tantric concept, as many of you might know. Transforming one's neuroses and emotional instabilities are very much part of the tantric concept. Not to reject what is bothering you, but to learn to accept and transform it. In fact, you could trace those ideas in the original Yogacarin writings.

Mahamudra, the Great Seal, is a central teaching of the Kagy school, along with the so-called six dharmas of Naropa. Formulated as a systematic practice by Gampopa (1079-1153), the mahamudra teachings trace their source to earlier Indian materials and focus on the cultivation of profound insight into the nature of the mind.

Across more than a millenium, the lamas, meditators, and scholars of Tibet created a vast literature dedicated to revealing the profound truths about who we are and how we should make use of our lives. Sages living in mountain caves and monastics pursuing their daily rituals used these texts to wear down their obscurations and make space for innate clarity and wisdom to manifest. For those of us in the modern world with hectic lives, however, such teachings from another time and place can be nearly impenetrable. To approach them, we need a guide, a helping hand from someone who is like ourselves but who has spent years learning the ins and outs of the sometimes secretive world of Tibetan Buddhist practice. Bestselling author and former Buddhist monk Alan Wallace is one such guide. With his trademark enthusiasm and keen intelligence, he introduces us here to one of the most cherished works of the Nyingma school of Tibetan Buddhism, Dudjom Lingpa's Vajra Essence. Written in the nineteenth century, the Vajra Essence presents the practice of Dzokchen, the Great Perfection the highest of all the meditation traditions and its contents have only been revealed to those with the requisite training. With permission from his teachers, Alan reveals here the works opening section, which presents the methods for calming the mind and bringing it to a state of effortless concentration, the practice of shamatha. In his earlier book, The Attention Revolution, Alan guided readers through the stages of shamatha step by step. Here he uses the wisdom of the Dzokchen teachings to open up this practice into a space of freedom from hope and fear. He makes obscure concepts intelligible to contemporary readers and allows us to glimpse the profound realizations of a great spiritual adept.

The foundations of Vajrayana practice are laid out with eloquence and precision here by one of the greatest Tibetan Buddhist masters of our age. His Holiness Dudjom Rinpoche's commentary on the preliminary practices (ngondro) is informed by his profound realization and wide-ranging scholarship, and illuminated with an array of quotations from the Vinaya, Sutra, and Tantra traditions. In addition to the commentary on the outer and inner preliminary practices, he provides other invaluable instructions on the correct view, conduct, and activity of a practitioner. It is now very common for people in the West to receive empowerments
into extraordinary and complex tantric practices. However, to embark
upon them without having first prepared the ground may have a number of
negative consequences. Our psychological and energetic maturity simply
may not have been developed sufficiently to bring out the real potential
of the practice.
In Preparing for Tantra, Rob Preece draws on his experience as a
Tantric Buddhist practitioner, meditation teacher, and psychotherapist
to show how to make the preliminary practices psychologically meaningful
and spiritually transformative. These preliminaries are an
extraordinarily rich collection of practices, and he examines them with
an eye to revealing how they may be used to heal and transform
psychological trauma, offering practical suggestions for integrating
them into one's daily life.

Healing with Fire: A Practical Manual of Tibetan Moxibustion By: Chogyal Namkhai Norbu

|

This manual is the first of its kind to focus on the Tibetan technique of moxibustion, an external therapy that uses the power of heat to stimulate a curative effect. A widespread form of traditional healing in the East, moxibustion is one of the most ancient medical therapies known to humanity. Mainly popularized as a branch of Chinese medicine, moxibustion was originally practiced in Shang Shung, a kingdom predating Tibet whose existence can be traced back at least four thousand years.
Healing with Fire is a comprehensive compendium of the five hundred most important and effective moxibustion points in the Tibetan and Shang Shung system, with an emphasis on practical instructions for readers with varying levels of expertise in the healing arts. The book is the culmination of decades of painstaking research by Professor Chogyal Namkhai Norbu, a foremost scholar of Tibetan culture and philosophy, who, inspired by his personal experience of this unique and effective treatment method, has gathered knowledge from ancient scriptures ranging from the well-known Four Medical Tantras to recondite manuscripts found in the caves of Tun-Huang.
The book features twenty-five original drawings illustrating the positions of the individual points, as well as an index of indications to facilitate the identification of points for the treatment of specific medical conditions. It includes an appendix that discusses arcane astrological factors frequently taken into consideration in Tibetan traditional medicine.

Having translated The Diamond Sutra and The Heart Sutra, and following with The Platform Sutra, Red Pine now turns his attention to perhaps the greatest Sutra of all. The Lankavatara Sutra is the holy grail of Zen. Zens First Patriarch, Bodhidharma, gave a copy of this text to his successor, Hui-ko, and told him everything he needed to know was in this book. Passed down from teacher to student ever since, this is the only Zen sutra ever spoken by the Buddha. Although it covers all the major teachings of Mahayana Buddhism, it contains but two teachings: that everything we perceive as being real is nothing but the perceptions of our own mind and that the knowledge of this is something that must be realized and experienced for oneself and cannot be expressed in words. In the words of Chinese Zen masters, these two teachings became known as have a cup of tea and taste the tea.
This is the first translation into English of the original text used by Bodhidharma, which was the Chinese translation made by Gunabhadra in 443 and upon which all Chinese Zen masters have relied ever since. In addition to presenting one of the most difficult of all Buddhist texts in clear English, Red Pine has also added summaries, explanations and notes, including relevant Sanskrit terms on the basis of which the Chinese translation was made. This promises to become an essential text for anyone seeking to deepen their understanding or knowledge of Zen.

For Thrangu Rinpoche, the book is covered in red silk and carries his picture on the cover. The book is entitled Ocean of Philosophy, and facing the title page is a photograph of him with the Karmapa, all surrounded by monks. The following page has a photograph of Thrangu Rinpoche and the encomium in Tibetan, followed on the next pages by translations into English and Chinese, which are provided for all the words of the book. Three stanzas each, prayers for Thrangu Rinpoches long life fill the next pages, beginning with Situ Rinpoche, then Jamgon Kongtrul Rinpoche, Goshir Gyaltsap Rinpoche, and Pawo Rinpoche. The layout of the pages is spacious, around the three stanzas of the supplications and also around the accompanying photos of the teacher offering the supplication and of Thrangu Rinpoche with that teacher.
The chapter on Thrangu Rinpoches Life and Liberation begins with a list of his eight previous incarnations and photographs from his life, including him together with the four main Kagyu tulkus whom he taught; at his monasteries in Nepal when they were under construction; with the heads of the other Tibetan traditions; with Pope Jean Paul II; on a great throne giving empowerments; reading a hand-written text, remindful of all the important texts he has published for the monastic colleges; writing calligraphy; with the large group of lamas who meet in 2002 for the Karma Kargyu at Thrangu Rinpoche's Vajra Vidya Institute in Sarnath; teaching and giving empowerments from his throne; and, of course, his inimitable smile.
The last section is a teaching from Thrangu Rinpoche on the famous Short Supplication to Vajradhara which is always chanted before his teachings, and his prayer to the Sixteenth Karmapa, Calling the Glorious Karmapa Rigpe Dorje Longingly from Afar. The final, full-page photo is of him supplicating with his palms together.

Before his death a few years ago, Kirti Tsenshap Rinpoche was a renowned teacher of Tibetan Buddhism who traveled widely. Revered as a teacher by even the Dalai Lama, he was known especially as a master of Buddhist tantra, and the teachings in this book are a singular record of his deep learning in that field. Originally delivered in California to a group of Western students, these teachings comment on a 19th-century introduction to tantra by the Mongolian lama Losang Palden. Rinpoche explains the distinctive features of the four classes of tantra action tantra, performance tantra, yoga tantra, and highest yoga tantra by describing the way one progresses through their paths and levels. Finally, he gives a special treatment of the unique methods of Kalachakra tantra.

Each one of us is responsible for all of humankind, and for the environment in which we live. . . . We must seek to lessen the suffering of others. Rather than working solely to acquire wealth, we need to do something meaningful, something seriously directed toward the welfare of humanity as a whole. To do this, you need to recognize that the whole world is part of you. from How to Be Compassionate
The surest path to true happiness lies in being intimately concerned with the welfare of others. Or, as His Holiness the Dalai Lama would say, in compassion.
In How to Be Compassionate, His Holiness reveals basic mistakes of attitude that lead us to inner turmoil, and how we can correct them to achieve a better tomorrow. He demonstrates precisely how opening our hearts and minds to other people is the best way to overcome the misguided ideas that are at the root of all our problems. He shows us how compassion can be a continuous wellspring of happiness in our own lives and how our newfound happiness can extend outward from us in ever wider and wider circles.
As we become more compassionate human beings, our friends, family, neighbors, loved onesand even our enemieswill find themselves less frequently in the thrall of destructive emotions like anger, jealousy, and fear, prompting them to become more warmhearted, kind, and harmonious forces within their own circles. With simple language and startling clarity, His Holiness makes evident as never before that the path to global harmony begins in the hearts of individual women and men. Enlivened by personal anecdotes and intimate accounts of the Dalai Lama's experiences as a student, thinker, political leader, and Nobel Peace Prize Laureate, How to Be Compassionate gives seekers of all faiths the keys to overcoming anger, hatred, and selfishness the primary obstacles to happinessand to becoming agents of positive transformation in our communities and the world at large.

A new translation of the classic biography of the most renowned saint in Tibetan Buddhist history "The Life of Milarepa" is one of the most beloved stories of the Tibetan people and a great literary example of the contemplative life. This biography, a dramatic tale from a culture now in crisis, can be read on several levels. A personal and moving introduction to Tibetan Buddhism, it is also a detailed guide to the search for liberation. It presents a quest for purification and buddhahood in a single lifetime, tracing the path of a great sinner who became a great saint. It is also a powerfully evocative narrative, full of magic, miracles, suspense, and humor, while reflecting the religious and social life of medieval Tibet.

Providing a rare glimpse of feminine Buddhist history, Niguma, Lady of Illusion brings to the forefront the life and teachings of a mysterious eleventh-century Kashmiri woman who became the source of a major Tibetan Buddhist practice lineage. More than an historical presentation, Niguma's story challenges the view that images of accomplished female practitioners are merely symbolic representations of the "feminine principle." In some cases they portray real spiritual leaders.
This volume includes the thirteen works that have been attributed to Niguma in the Tibetan Buddhist canon. These collected works form the basis of an ancient lineage, Shangpa, which continues to be actively studied and practiced today. These works include the source verses for such esoteric practices as the Six Yogas, the Great Seal, and the Chakrasamvara and Hevajra tantric practices that are widespread in Tibetan traditions.

Renowned Buddhist philosopher B. Alan Wallace reasserts the power of shamatha and vipashyana, traditional Buddhist meditations, to clarify the mind's role in the natural world. Raising profound questions about human nature, free will, and experience versus dogma, Wallace challenges the claim that consciousness is no more than an emergent property of the brain with little relation to universal events. Rather, he maintains that the observer is essential to measuring quantum systems and that mental phenomena (however conceived) influence brain function and behavior.
Wallace embarks on a two-part mission: to restore and then transcend human nature. Part I explains the value of skepticism in Buddhism and science and the difficulty of merging their experiential methods of inquiry. Yet Wallace emphasizes that Buddhist views on human nature and the possibility of free will free us from the metaphysical constraints of scientific materialism. He then explores the radical empiricism inspired by William James and applies it to the four schools of Indian Buddhist philosophy and the Great Perfection school of Buddhism. Since Buddhism begins with the assertion that ignorance lies at the root of all suffering and the path to freedom is reached through knowledge, Buddhist practice can be viewed as a progression from agnosticism (not knowing) to gnosticism (knowing), acquired through exceptional mental health, mindfulness, and introspection. Wallace discusses these topics in detail, identifying similarities and differences between scientific and Buddhist understanding, and concludes with an explanation of shamatha and vipashyana and their potential for fathoming the nature, origins, and potentials of consciousness.

The realization of impermanence and the inevitability of death have acted as the motivating factor for one to realize the depth of suffering of samsara. Therefore, one has abandoned all concerns with temporal matters, but has given one's thoughts to the welfare of all sentient beings who are one's own mother and father. For their benefit, one would like to attain enlightenment. Furthermore, such an individual may want to achieve enlightenment in one lifetime with one body through use of the effective methods of Vajrayana." from Transcript

The autobiography of Palden Gyatso, who was arrested in 1959 after taking part in a non-violent demonstration for Tibetan independence. After a failed escape bid he was starved and tortured. Following his release in 1992, after 33 years of captivity, he fled to India and began to reveal the true extent of the Chinese oppression in Tibet.
Palden Gyatso, a Buddhist monk since childhood, was arrested
by the Chinese Communist Army in 1959. He spent the next 33 years in
prison for the "crimes" of peaceful demonstration and refusal to
denounce his apolitical teacher as an Indian spy. He was tortured,
starved and sentenced to hard labor. He watched his nation and culture
destroyed, his teachers, friends and family displaced, jailed or killed
under Chinese occupation.
Fire Under the Snow reaches back to Palden's birth in 1933
and follows him through the Orwellian nightmare that began with the
Chinese invasion. We cut back and forth between the past and Palden's
present as an activist, living in exile. Our P.O.V. becomes a "third
eye" hovering over Paldens current life, haunted by his memories of the
past. We explore the escalating cycle of interrogation and physical
violation during his years in prison that ended decades later with
Palden's escape from Tibet and a cathartic meeting with His Holiness the
Dalai Lama.
The film also investigates the basis of Palden's resilience. He
claims that faith in Buddhism helped him survive the 33 years of his
imprisonment. Furthermore, he insists that he is not angry with the
Chinese. He believes these atrocities befell him due to "karma."
While imprisoned, the mere existence of the Dalai Lama was a
beacon of hope to Palden and fellow prisoners-of-conscience. They
dreamed of being released from their torment and delivered into his open
arms. Today, the Dalai Lama and his supporters advance the idea of a
"mutually beneficial" autonomy within China, an idea generated from
Buddhist philosophy. Palden Gyatso and a sizable constituency are
holding-out for total independence. Thus, a painful schism exists.
Through discussions lead by Palden, competing political agendas are
revealed within the Tibetan exile community.
At the 2006 Winter Olympics in Turin, we filmed the entirety of
Palden's participation in a hunger strike. Using this highly publicized
and symbolic event, an attempt is made to draw public attention to
Beijing's hosting of the 2008 Olympics. International Olympic Committee
Vice President Mario Pescante visits the site of the hunger strike to
negotiate a cessation of the action, and reveals the impotence of his
position. We capture Palden's dedication to the cause, his mentoring of
the younger Tibetan hunger strikers, and his emotional recollections of
lost comrades. The strike throws into harsh relief the reality that
human rights concerns are trampled under by naked economic ambitions.
Despite all, Palden Gyatso remains unbroken, keeping the flame of his spirit ablaze.
Fire Under the Snow reveals the contours of an inspirational story: the survival of a mind and a soul under unthinkable duress.

Adeu Rinpoche's life was extraordinary from the beginning. He was recognized by an incarnation of the previous Adeu Rinpoche and enthroned at the age of seven as the Eighth Adeu Rinpoche. As a child and teenager he mastered writing, calligraphy, poetry, astrology, mandala painting, prayer, and meditation. Then, in 1958 at the age of twenty-seven, his monastery was attacked and all sacred texts and statues were completely destroyed by the Chinese as part of the Cultural Revolution. Sentenced to fifteen years in prison for his religious beliefs, the author was sent to a remote labor camp, where he watched many of his friends die under the harsh conditions. But imprisonment had an unexpected blessing: he met many accomplished masters, including the late Khenpo Munsel, and learned many practices from them.
Freedom in Bondage offers a portrait of the life and philosophy of one of the twentieth century's most respected meditation masters his early training in spiritual practices, his flight and capture, interrogation and sentencing, and the years in prison. His voice is calm and nonjudgmental, uplifting the reader with his compassion for his captors. The title captures the authors inner liberation in a dire situation.

Three Long Life Prayer Book

|
Bound in deep blue silk and dedicated to Khenpo Tsultrim Gyamtso. Following the format of the two previous volumes, opposite the title page is a smiling photo of him and the title, Dance of Great Bliss. Following the prayers for his long life is the chapter on Life and Liberation. There are early photographs from Buxsar, India where he studied after leaving Tibet; with the Sixteenth Karmapa in Europe; with the previous and present Jamgon Kongtrul Rinpoche; with Tenga Rinpoche, Thrangu Rinpoche, and the previous Kalu Rinpoche; teaching his students Sangye Nyenpa Rinpoche and Ponlop Rinpoche in Nepal and also in Sikkim many years ago at Karma Shri Nalanda Institute, the shedra at the Karmapas monastery in Rumtek. In Bhutan he is pictured at the nunnery he founded with the nuns who escaped with him from Tibet. Another photo shows him teaching in a large cave, the dwelling he prizes most of all, and in another he is encircled by his dancing students, and then he is dancing as well. The final chapter gives his famous Progressive Stages of Meditation on Emptiness in a five-verse form; stanzas on How to Practice During Daily Activities; and finally, The Sky-Dragons Profound Roar. The last page has an image of him pointing a camera at the reader.
Facing the title page, underneath the radiant photo of him is the title Transmission by Seeing. Following the encomium and long life prayers, the chapter on his Life and Liberation, starts with his previous two incarnations. The photos include his travel to the United States with the Sixteenth Karmapa and together with the Seventeenth in Tibet at Tsurphu; at Gyuto where he is performing a ritual with the Karmapa, remindful of all the years Tenga Rinpoche spent as the Vajra Master at Rumtek; him with the previous and present Jamgon Kongtrul Rinpoche; another with Sangye Nyenpa Rinpoche at Benchen Monastery in Tibet and Benchen in Nepal, which Tenga Rinpoche built for Nyenpa Rinpoche; in full lama dance costume performing the Mahakala lama dance; looking at the Chakrasamvara mandala with Trungpa Rinpoche; photos from his travels to many European centers; and teaching at Rumtek. The final section gives his verses of A Short Guru Yoga on the Root Lama Karmapa.

Nine hundred years ago, amidst the snow-capped peaks of eastern Tibet, there was born a spiritual master whose compassion for beings would shape the future of Buddhism in Tibet. This great being was the First Karmapa, Dusum Khyenpa, who instituted the practice of intentionally reincarnating in a way that disciples could recognize--a practice that forms the backbone of Tibetan Buddhism as we know it today. His Holiness the Seventeenth Karmapa, Ogyen Trinley Dorje, will lead the international Karma Kagyu community in Karmapa 900--a grand yearlong celebration to commemorate the 900th anniversary of the First Karmapa's birth.
