Buddha ranks among the most often depicted holy figures of the world -
perhaps appearing more than Christ, a subject widely treated by Western
artists. Venerated in all the nations of Asia, and even beyond, his
image took form along the Silk Road, the birthplace of many schools of
Buddhism. Indeed, the Buddhist religion recognizes many Buddhas
representing various traditions: such as Buddhism of the Ancient
Teaching (Theravada), of the Great Vehicle" (Mahayana) and Tantric
Buddhism (Varjrayana).

By: Gene Kudirka
Our Price: $10.00

in the main shrine room of the Vajra Vidya, there are eight arhats along the east side and eight against the west side of the main shrine room. They are placed on the walls according to their rank, with the most senior closest to the main Buddha statue. The two attendants, Huashang and Dharamatala are placed along the south wall. They are both laymen; Huashang is the plump Chinese sponsor who is surrounded by playful children and Dharmatala is the great Indian master who can be seen carying a basket of texts. They are not considered as part of the sixteen original arhats since they are laymen and not monks, but are always pictured as part of the group. The four guardian kings can be seen upon entering the Vajra Vidya Institute compound as the facing wall.

Absence of the Buddha Image in Early Buddhist Art
By: Kanoko Tanaka
Our Price: $45.00

It is next to impossible today to even think of Buddhism without the presence of the Buddha image! The image of the Buddha, in truth, has not only come to symbolise the essence of Buddhism but is also a brilliant expression of the cultural/artistic achievements of the Buddhists since ancient times. Surprisingly, the Buddha image developed at a later stage of the evolutionary process; after the parinirvana of the Buddha, the Buddhists for a considerable time beheld the Buddha and experienced him in their own minds without taking recourse to the Buddha image itself. more info

In 1819, a group of British soldiers on a hunting expedition chanced upon the Ajanta caves in a ravine some 200 miles north-east of Bombay. Ranging from the second century BC to the sixth century AD, the breathtaking Buddhist paintings and sculptures found there rank among the world's most important cultural treasures.

Ajanta provides virtually the only evidence remaining of painting styles that first developed in India and then travelled with the spread of Buddhism into the Himalayan regions, and then via the Silk Roads across Central Asia into China, and from there to Japan and Korea.

All-Knowing Buddha: A Secret Guide
All-Knowing Buddha: A Secret Guide
By: Rubin Museum of Art / MAS
Our Price: $30.00

This book is the culmination of a long story that began with the
acquisition of fifty-four paintings directly from an elderly priest, who
had served in the Belgian mission in Inner Mongolia for many years,
beginning in the 1920s. Father Raphael Verbois gave the paintings in
1977 to the then Director of the Ethnographic Museum in Antwerp, Dr.
Adriaan Claerhout. While initially they were thought to represent the
life of the Buddha and some unknown tantric rituals, there is now
scholarly unanimity about the fact that the life of the Buddha is just a
small part of what the album represents.

Amaravati : the art of an early Buddhist monument in context
By: Akira Shimada; Michael D Willis
Our Price: $85.00

Buddhism originated in north India and spread to other parts of the subcontinent in the third century BCE. The Andhra region, located along the south-east coast of India, welcomed Buddhism and an important shrine was built at Amaravati, probably to house relics of the Buddha brought from the north. Amaravati was enlarged and embellished over several centuries from about 200 BCE, transforming it into what ancient inscriptions describe as a mahacetiya or  great shrine. more info

Here, one of the great practitioners and master artists of our time presents a guide to the Tibetan Buddhist path, from preliminary practices through enlightenment, from the artist's perspective. With profound wisdom, he shows how visual representations of the sacred in paintings, sculptures, mandalas, and stupas can be an essential support to practice throughout the path. This work, based on the author's landmark Tibetan text, The Path to Liberation, includes basic Buddhist teachings and practices, clearly pointing out the relevance of these for both the sacred artist and the practitioner, along with an overview of the history and iconography of Buddhist art. more info

Arising from mind and conditioned by mind, art is a mirror of our consciousness.[...]” - Excerpt from page 1

Buddhist art - its nature, creation, function, conservation and contemporary manifestations - was the subject of the Buddhist Art Forum, a major conference held at The Courtauld Institute of Art in 2012 and sponsored by The Robert H.N. Ho Family Foundation. For the first time a representative group of those with a stake in Buddhist art - including art historians, conservators, curators and officials, a monk from Nepal and a contemporary artist - was gathered to address these issues. The twenty-eight papers in this resulting ground-breaking volume consider Buddhist art from the earliest Indian stupas to contemporary Himalayan thangkas, as well as its ritual use and audience, its tourist consumption in expanding economies, its often ill-conceived conservation, and its influence on modern and contemporary Western art. A stimulating range of viewpoints is expressed in this lavishly illustrated volume, making a genuine contribution to the awareness and understanding of these issues and developments that goes beyond regional and specialist boundaries. more info

Before and Beyond the Image: Aniconic Symbolism in Buddhist Art
Our Price: $45.00

Published a quarter-century ago, Dietrich Seckel's essay remains a vital contribution to a much-debated feature of Buddhist art, its aniconism, its aversion to depicting spiritual entities of the very highest order. Unlike Judaism, early Christianity, and Islam, he explains, the Buddhist faith has not condemned the representation of holy beings or living creatures. Nonetheless it believes that its most crucial spiritual insights lie beyond the power of human imagination to describe or depict; the visual arts can allude to them only obliquely, through omission on the use of non-iconic figures. more info

The human mind has reached continuously over millennia for visions of realms beyond sufferingwithout death, pain, longing, or ignorance. In many cultures, terms used to describe such places share the root meaning of "paradise," a "walled garden," and corresponding notions of protection, delight, and contentment. This publication lays out in sculptures and paintings the concept of "paradise" in Tibetan Buddhism, understood through different approaches and teachings, the most radical of which confronts us with the realization that paradise is all around us if we are able to perceive it. Poetry and writings by Buddhist masters, including texts that guide the passage from death to rebirth, are provided to accompany the visual communications of these ideas in painting, textiles and sculpture. more info

According to tradition, Shakyamuni Buddha was a prince who attained enlightenment and whose teachings gave birth to Buddhism. Western audiences today recognize certain iconographic elements, such as distended earlobes and monk’s robes, as belonging to the Buddha. Yet depictions of the buddha vary widely across countries and cultures, revealing regional differences in religious belief. For example, the earliest buddha images, from Pakistan, depict the narrative of the Enlightened One’s life, whereas later images from Thailand portray a crowned and bejeweled Buddha. This great variety of interpretations represents a rich inheritance that enhances our understanding of the cultures that created such devotional objects. In this book, Nancy Tingley explores the breadth of Buddhist belief as elucidated through the many depictions of buddhas, from the first millennium to modern times more info

Amidst the traditional and rich atmosphere of statues making and selling business especially in Lalitpur itself, he sensed a dearth of information in this aspect. Although, a water resource engineer by profession, he happened to devote his time and efforts in collecting information and studying about different deities and masters. There are so many different kinds of deities that one book is bound to get fascinated and bewildered at times. Through this book, Shakya has tried to cater to the readers some very pertinent and concise information about the most popular Mahayana Buddhist deities and masters whose statues are being made. This book should be useful to many readers in terms of arousing curiosity as well as generating deeper interest to further the knowledge in Mahayana Buddhism and also instigate a desire to follow the path of Enlightenment ultimately in whatever form, the Tathagata Buddha had shown, in a way suitable to individual's preference.

Published materials on Buddhist sculptures and paintings particularly lack a developmental and holistic perspective; few endeavored to elucidate the chronologies and stylistic relationships with their Indian subcontinental sources. This volume, which originally intended as a complementary work to my book 'BUDDHIST ARCHITECTURE' first published in 2010, will address these scholastic deficiencies and primarily covers the period between the third century BCE-twelfth centuries CE. It results in new answers that Vajrayana imageries have strongly been influenced by early Hindu iconography and Tantric Hinduism. It also proposes a fresh chronology for the contentious Central Asian murals after carefully reviewing Indian and Chinese sources. The volume further examines Aniconic sculptures and paintings in India as well as their origins and unique symbolisms. more info
