Buddha ranks among the most often depicted holy figures of the world - perhaps appearing more than Christ, a subject widely treated by Western artists. Venerated in all the nations of Asia, and even beyond, his image took form along the Silk Road, the birthplace of many schools of Buddhism. Indeed, the Buddhist religion recognizes many Buddhas representing various traditions: such as Buddhism of “the Ancient Teaching” (Theravada), of “the Great Vehicle” (Mahayana) and Tantric Buddhism (Varjrayana).
A figure adored by all, Buddha has been depicted in every art form: sculpture, often of monumental size, like the now destroyed Buddhas of Bamyan, painting and above all in countless cave murals, such as those of Ajanta in India or Dunhuang in China.
Perfect for all those passionate about Asian art, from neophytes to Buddhists, this fascinating work invites the reader to discover or rediscover Buddha, his history, his codes, but also his innumerable faces through one thousand representations selected from among the most beautiful works held in the world’s greatest museums.

One of the greatest contributors to Buddhism was the first Jamgon Kongtrul Lodro Thaye, who in the nineteenth century, along with Jamyang Khyentse Wangpo and Chokgyur Dechen Lingpa, were the heart of a Buddhist renaissance that revived the dying lineages of Buddhism. Jamgon Kongtrul gathered together all these lineage transmissions and teachings into what is known as The Five Treasures of Jamgon Kongtrul: 1. The Treasury of Hidden Treasure Teachings (Rinchen Terzod), a collection of all the termas; 2. The Treasury of Kagyu Mantra Teachings (Kagyu Ngakzod), a collection of all the tantras, practices and empowerments of the Kagyu lineage; 3. The Treasury of Spiritual Instructions (Dam Ngakzod), a collection of all the essential teachings, practices, tantras and sacred instructions of the eight lineages of Vajrayana Buddhism; 4. The Treasury of Vast Teachings (Gyachen Kardzo), the collected writings of Jamgon Kongtrul; 5. The Treasury of All-Encompassing Knowledge (Sheja Kunkhyap Dzo), a collection of his writings on the ten traditional fields of knowledge.

Here is a lucid, accessible, and inspiring guide to the six perfections--Buddhist teachings about six dimensions of human character that require "perfecting": generosity, morality, tolerance, energy, meditation, and wisdom. Drawing on the Diamond Sutra, the Large Sutra on Perfect Wisdom , and other essential Mahayana texts, Dale Wright shows how these teachings were understood and practiced in classical Mahayana Buddhism and how they can be adapted to contemporary life in a global society. What would the perfection of generosity look like today, for example? What would it mean to give with neither ulterior motives nor naivete? Devoting a separate chapter to each of the six perfections, Wright combines sophisticated analysis with real-life applications. Buddhists have always stressed self-cultivation, the uniquely human freedom that opens the possibility of shaping the kind of life we will live and the kind of person we will become. For those interested in ideals of human character and practices of self-cultivation, The Six Perfections offers invaluable guidance.

In this pithy, inspiring book, Pema Chödrön presents the Buddhist concept of shenpa—which can be translated as “getting stuck” or “getting hooked”—and shows us how we can liberate ourselves from it. Shenpa is that irritating sensation that arises in moments when life suddenly becomes disappointing, difficult, or painful. Perhaps someone criticizes your work, your appearance, or your child. Something within you tightens, shuts down. That’s shenpa. After we tighten, we instinctively start to blame ourselves or others. We might get angry and lash out in words or actions. Or we might reach for a cigarette, a drink, or some other addictive substance to numb our pain. Chodron shows us the way out of these habitual reactions that keep us locked in cycles of suffering.

Tibetan Buddhism describes three gates that everyone must pass through on the road to spiritual liberation. With The Three Commitments, Pema Chödrön brings her unique blend of insight and gentle instruction to guide practitioners through each of these thresholds as they seek the source of true happiness. As Pema explains, suffering arises when we resist the law of impermanence—the fact that everything we know, including ourselves, will one day die. Here she provides teachings and practices for fully embracing life’s ephemeral nature using these three traditional monastic vows, or “commitments”:

  • The Pratimoksha vows—how we can find personal liberation through the inner work of letting go
  • The Bodhisattva vows—the way of genuine and compassionate service to others
  • The Tantric vows—how to accept impermanence with true equanimity and touch the underlying stillness from which all worldly forms arise

In the past, initiates took their vows when entering the secluded world of the monastery. Today, laypeople are also embracing these commitments as a way to deepen their practice while fully participating in everyday life. Through her practical instruction and accessible interpretation of ancient wisdom, Pema Chödrön helps listeners discover how each of these sacred vows is not a burden or restriction, but a guiding beacon on the path to liberation.

The Hundred Verses of Advice is the last testament that Padampa Sangye gave to the people of Tingri in Tibet.
The Indian sage and spiritual master Padampa Sangye was a great traveler. He stayed for for a long time in Tingri, on the frontier of Tibet near Nepal, where he spent much time in teaching and established a monastery. Having remained for ten years in Tibet and traveled for twelve years in China, he returned to Tibet until his death. Before passing away in Tingri in 1117, he said to his disciples: “My mind has blended with the phenomenal world,” thus demonstrated all dualistic perceptions had disappeared from his mind. He then fixed his gaze on the sky and passed away.

It is widely believed that Padampa Sangye was an incarnation of the 8th century monk Kamalashila, one of the early teachers of Dharma in Tibet

Genuine art has the power to awaken and liberate. The renowned meditation master and artist Chögyam Trungpa called this type of art “dharma art”—any creative work that springs from an awakened state of mind, characterized by directness, unselfconsciousness, and nonaggression. Dharma art provides a vehicle to appreciate the nature of the things as they are and express it without any struggle or desire to achieve. A work of dharma art brings out the goodness and dignity of the situation it reflects—dignity that comes from the artist’s interest in the details of life and sense of appreciation for experience. Trungpa shows how the principles of dharma art extend to everyday life: any activity can provide an opportunity to relax and open our senses to the phenomenal world.
An expanded edition of Trungpa's Dharma Art (1996), this book includes a new introduction and essay.

Stephen T. Asma, PhD, will be the first one to tell you he is not your typical idea of a Buddhist. He thinks gurus are screwballs. He eats meat. He drinks too much. He's not interested in giving up sex. If a guy like him can be a Buddhist, so can you.

In Why I Am a Buddhist, Asma argues the case for Buddhism. He is iconoclastic and unapologetic. Too often he asserts Buddhism is confused with the more faddish elements of California culture. Being a Buddhist does not require extreme vegetarianism, relentless meditation, or a variety of smells and bells.

In seven chapters, Asma presents a hard-headed and thoroughly entertaining case for the Buddhist way. Some of his topics include Buddhism and family life, Buddhism and art, Buddhism and global concerns, and Buddhism and Eros. His take on Buddhism is refreshing and it will make you want to find out more about dharma, karma, and everything in between.

Tsele Natsok Rangdröl is renowned in the Kagyü and Nyingma schools of Tibetan Buddhism for his brilliant scholarship, profound exposition, and meditative accomplishment. Comprised of two of his most important texts, this collection presents four essential Buddhist strands of philosophical viewpoint and meditation technique: the teachings of the Prajnaparamita (Perfection of Wisdom) body of literature; the philosophy of the Middle Way; Mahamudra meditation; and Dzogchen teachings and practice.

The theme of these teachings is that in every person’s heart, mind, and spirit there is an identical essence that makes that person a living Buddha. The focus is on how to realize that essence through “effortless” training based on the four techniques. Since the training is unbound by cultural or temporal limitations, the truth the book conveys is as valuable today as it was in centuries past. This system has been applied by people from many walks of life, giving them a simple method to not only withstand life’s challenges but to transcend them. This redesigned edition of The Heart of the Matter and Lamp of Mahamudra features illuminating introductions and a new foreword, bringing Rangdröl’s timeless message to contemporary seekers.

This book offers elements of all three, and is designed as a beautiful gift for the mind, the eye, the ear, and above all, the heart.

All of us experience obstacles as part of our journey, in life and on the spiritual path. In many cases, we think of them as purely something unpleasant to overcome, or as a mistake that needs correcting. Here, Chögyam Trungpa takes a radically different approach to such obstacles, teaching that unexpected chaos, confusion, and emotional upheavals can actually be used as fuel for the journey—an energy that can transform confusion into sanity and wisdom. He illustrates this transformative principle through telling the lively history of the Trungpa tulkus (a lineage within the Kagyü tradition of Tibetan Buddhism), of which he was the eleventh incarnation. Trungpa referred to his lineage as the "Mishap Lineage" because of the ups and downs and colorful lives that were typical of his predecessors, and true of his own life as well. The stories of the Trungpas are seen as a guide for the practitioner’s journey and help us to understand how important lineage and community remain for us today.

Many of the issues surrounding bhiksuni (nun) ordination in Tibetan Buddhism are shared by other parts of the Buddhist world. While some regard the bhiksuni ordination movement to be largely driven by Western Buddhist converts, efforts to revive the female order have actually been initiated by various progressive Asian monks and nuns over the last century. New bhiksuni groups at various sites, including Korea, Sri Lanka, and Thailand, are now at varying stages of maturity. All of these groups are participating in an ineluctable movement across Buddhism, one that is ultimately to be connected to larger shifts in our contemporary global civil society. This is a collection of essays taken from a global conference on bhiksuni ordination from all traditions that took place in Hamburg, Germany. The essays in this book cover the breadth of Buddhist traditions and convey the history and the vision for the future of the role of women as ambassadors and curators of the ordained Buddhist community. This book shows a shift toward granting women full ordination in all traditions of Buddhism.

Nagarjuna's Vigrahavyavartani is an essential work of Madhyamaka Buddhist philosophical literature. Written in an accessible question-and-answer style, it contains Nagarjuna's replies to criticisms of his philosophy of the "Middle Way." The Vigrahavyavartani has been widely cited both in canonical literature and in recent scholarship; it has remained a central text in India, Tibet, China, and Japan, and has attracted the interest of greater and greater numbers of Western readers.

In The Dispeller of Disputes, Jan Westerhoff offers a clear new translation of the Vigrahavyavartani, taking current philological research and all available editions into account, and adding his own insightful philosophical commentary on the text. Crucial manuscript material has been discovered since the earlier translations were written, and Westerhoff draws on this material to produce a study reflecting the most up-to-date research on this text. In his nuanced and incisive commentary, he explains Nagarjuna's arguments, grounds them in historical and textual scholarship, and explicitly connects them to contemporary philosophical concerns.

The work presents in clear focus, comparative perspectives on the nature of man, mind, motivation, conflict, anxiety and suffering, as well as the therapeutic management of these problems, in both the writings of Sigmund Freud and the discourses of the Buddha. The nature of the instinct of sexuality, ego instinct and the death instinct in Freud are compared to parallel concepts in Buddhism.
An interesting addition to the study is the discussion of the question whether Shopenhauer is a link between Freud and Buddhism.
This edition of the book also throws new light on some of the dilemmas of Freudian psychology from a Buddhist perspective. It is a valuable contribution to the study of philosophy in cross-cultural perspective and should be of interest to both scholars and general readers.

From the early 1980s onward, the field of Tibetan studies has been transformed by the opening of Tibet to foreign researchers. This has ushered in a new era of engagement with Tibet characterized by partnership between Tibetan scholars and their international colleagues, and by an increasing focus on the study of modern Tibet. Concomitant with this trend, the study of traditional Tibetan society and the imperative for cultural preservation has gained a newfound sense of urgency as the older generation of Tibetans, both in Tibet and in the Tibetan diaspora, began to pass away, taking their stories with them.

This volume of essays, Contemporary Visions in Tibetan Studies, reflects in many ways a critical phase in the discipline of Tibetan studies. The contributions, from promising young scholars, both Tibetan and non-Tibetan from across the globe, are divided evenly between essays that engage with the various modernities of Tibet, China and the diaspora on the one hand, and more classically oriented studies of history, culture and religion on the other. Here Tibetan tradition is scrutinized from without and within, sometimes upheld and sometimes revised. Reflecting the growth of the field and its movement away from assertions of Tibetan exceptionalism and towards cross-disciplinary and cross-cultural projects, many of the essays are problem-oriented, and their enquiries take them outside of the confines of the Tibetan cultural area and towards engagement with the wider world.

Born in 1903 as British troops were preparing to invade his homeland, Gendun Chopel was identified at any early age as the incarnation of a famous lama and became a Buddhist monk, excelling in the debating courtyards of the great monasteries of Tibet. At the age of thirty-one, he gave up his monk’s vows and set off for India, where he would wander, often alone and impoverished, for over a decade. Returning to Tibet, he was arrested by the government of the young Dalai Lama on trumped-up charges of treason, emerging from prison three years later a broken man. He died in 1951 as troops of the People’s Liberation Army marched into Lhasa.

Throughout his life, from his childhood to his time in prison, Gendun Chopel wrote poetry that conveyed the events of his remarkable life. In the Forest of Faded Wisdom is the first comprehensive collection of his oeuvre in any language, assembling poems in both the original Tibetan and in English translation. A master of many forms of Tibetan verse, Gendun Chopel composed heartfelt hymns to the Buddha, pithy instructions for the practice of the dharma, stirring tributes to the Tibetan warrior-kings, cynical reflections on the ways of the world, and laments of a wanderer, forgotten in a foreign land. These poems exhibit the technical skill—wordplay, puns, the ability to evoke moods of pathos and irony—for which Gendun Chopel was known and reveal the poet to be a consummate craftsman, skilled in both Tibetan and Indian poetics. With a directness and force often at odds with the conventions of belles lettres, this is a poetry that is at once elegant and earthy. In the Forest of Faded Wisdom is a remarkable introduction to Tibet’s sophisticated poetic tradition and its most intriguing twentieth-century writer.

Here is a pithy and compelling presentation of the Four Noble Truths of Buddhism, the foundational teachings that are studied and followed by Buddhists of all traditions. The Four Noble Truths begin with the essential insight that all humans suffer, and they go on to describe the Buddhist path of liberation from suffering.

Chogyam Trungpa—the renowned Tibetan Buddhist master who was a major figure in the transmission of Buddhism to the West—presents these key teachings in his characteristically forceful, provocative, and inspiring style. Drawn from never-before-published materials, The Truth of Suffering will appeal strongly to both beginning and advanced practitioners of Buddhism.

Timely and audacious, Buddha at the Apocalypse challenges us to look directly at the devastating assumptions underlying the very mechanisms of the modern world. We believe with certainty in the inevitable forward march of progress, in the natural rightness of humankind’s control of the environment, and, most pervasively, in the idea of an epic struggle that requires righteousness to utterly destroy evil. These images of apocalypse and dominance pervade our language, our politics, and, with coming of 2012, even our escapist entertainment. In Buddha at the Apocalypse, Kurt Spellmeyer offers us an alternative view that comes like breath of cool, fresh air in these times. Drawing on the Buddha, Spellmeyer makes an impassioned clarion call to awaken from the culture of destruction — or perish within it.

Gustav has been planning the trip for some time--he is going to a retreat in a Buddhist monastery. But Uwe is undertaking the trip on a whim at the spur of the moment. Unexpectedly, Uwe's wife and children walked out on him, so he is going on the trip because he needs to be with his brother. On their first night in Tokyo, the brothers go out for dinner but then suffer a cascading series of disasters as they manage to lose their way, their money, their bank cards, and then, in the organized chaos of a massive Tokyo interchange, each other. Gustav is desperate and, hilariously, finds himself singing for money in the subway. Magically, it works.

The United States, primarily a Judeo-Christian nation until recently, now encompasses theological groups relatively unknown in the early days of the republic. Buddhism -- the world's fourth largest religion after Christianity, Islam and Hinduism -- has been steadily gaining adherents in America.

THE BUDDHA, a two-hour documentary from Emmy Award winner David Grubin, relates the life of the Indian sage who famously gained enlightenment as he sat beneath a fig tree two-and-a-half millennia ago. This film tells the Buddha's story through painting and sculptures by some of the world's greatest artists and tracks his biography across the sweeping landscapes of northern India.

The testimony of contemporary Buddhists, from Pulitzer Prize-winning poet W.S. Merwin to the Dalai Lama, provide insight into the ancient narrative of the man who never claimed to be God or God's emissary, but merely a human being who, in a world of unavoidable pain and suffering, had achieved a serenity that others, too, could find.

This documentary tells the story of his life, a journey especially relevant in our own times.

The capacity to awaken is inherent in all of us, and each and every one of us can do it. That’s the heart of Gaylon Ferguson’s remarkably encouraging message in his long-awaited first book—and it’s backed by more than thirty years of study and teaching, during which time he’s inspired thousands of people on the spiritual path. The meditative mind is not something we need to attain, he says, it’s our very nature, and our desire to follow the spiritual path is nothing other than a manifestation of that nature already being there, just below the surface.

He encourages us to assess our “spiritual progress” with honesty and without judgment in order to see where our sticking points are and to get past them, and he provides exercises and much practical advice. His friendly and supportive approach to meditation practice is perfect for new meditators, and it will also provide renewed inspiration for anyone who’s been practicing for years.
