Buddhist Paintings Calendar 2010
Our Price: $13.99
Members Price: $12.59

<br>Buddhism originated with the teachings of Shakyamuni, the historical Buddha, who achieved enlightenment and educated others about the path to self-realization. The Buddha’s teachings spread from his native India to much of the rest of Asia, each culture adding its own imprint. Traveling storytellers used thangkas, which depict various deities and other Buddhist figures, as visual aids in relating their tales. Over time, such paintings became models for devotional scrolls and teaching tools used by Buddhist monks. The twelve exquisite thangkas and hanging scrolls in this calendar were made in Tibet, Nepal, Korea, Japan, and China between the thirteenth century and contemporary times.

Poster-sized reproductions of classical paintings produced to the highest standards. An annual favorite

The antique scroll-art masterpieces seen in Wisdom's Tibetan Art Calendar 2008 are called thangkas. While the thangka is common to Tibetan Buddhists, its finest examples are highly sought-after in the international art community and have become hot properties in the same vein as Oriental rugs and ceramics. As a result, the best of these works are seldom, if ever, available for public viewing.

This is why Wisdom's Tibetan Art Calendar is so special. It's an affordable way to enjoy incredibly rare and meaningful works of sacred art, year-round. These thirteen sacred paintings by Tibet's master painters represent a variety of classical images, mandalas, deities, and icons. Each poster-sized picture is produced to the highest German printing standards, and is suitable for framing. Complete with in-depth explanations of their cultural and philosophical significance, these exquisite fine art reproductions will be treasured for years to come.

International Campaign for Tibet
Women in Tibet are known for their strength and wisdom and as keepers of traditional culture. They have long enjoyed a somewhat better status in society compared to many cultures surrounding the Tibetan plateau. Female infanticide, for example, is unknown in Tibet. However, as the Dalai Lama's mother wrote, in Tibet "the husband-wife relationship was not one of equality. The woman is always subservient." The challenges within Tibetan society now are compounded by the struggle to maintain a distinct Tibetan culture as more and more Chinese settlers move into Tibet. Women have responded by becoming leaders in business and community organizations, nuns, educators, professors and writers. In addition, women in Tibet are at the forefront of the human rights and freedom movements. Women are slowly obtaining a less subservient role in society. ICT's 2010 Women of Tibet calendar pays homage to Tibetan women and how they confront issues of discrimination, poverty and national subjugation. Your purchase of this calendar provides funds for the International Campaign for Tibet (ICT), which works to promote human rights and democratic freedoms for the people of Tibet, and helps to raise awareness about Tibet during this crucial period in its history. Founded in 1988, ICT is a nonprofit membership organization with offices in Washington, DC, Amsterdam, Berlin and Brussels. To find out more or to become a member, please visit www.savetibet.org.
