<br>Buddhism originated with the teachings of Shakyamuni, the historical Buddha, who achieved enlightenment and educated others about the path to self-realization. The Buddha’s teachings spread from his native India to much of the rest of Asia, each culture adding its own imprint. Traveling storytellers used thangkas, which depict various deities and other Buddhist figures, as visual aids in relating their tales. Over time, such paintings became models for devotional scrolls and teaching tools used by Buddhist monks. They have long enjoyed a somewhat better status in society compared to many cultures surrounding the Tibetan plateau. Female infanticide, for example, is unknown in Tibet. However, as the Dalai Lama's mother wrote, in Tibet "the husband-wife relationship was not one of equality. The woman is always subservient."
