[...] Ngondro literally means "that preparation which must go before all else," so the term "ngondro practice" signifies the foundation, or preliminary practice to more advanced practices. Yet even within this preliminary practice, there are two stages: the ordinary preliminary practice and the extraordinary preliminary practice. The ordinary preliminary practice, or the "four thoughts which turn the mind to the Dharma", prepares the mind for the extraordinary preliminary practice, or the four foundation practices of ngondro. Thus, it is important that we first discuss the ordinary preliminary practice, because without a sincere understanding of that, we will be unable to appreciate the extraordinary preliminary practices.
