Description

The original Sanskrit versions of Acharya Nagarjuna’s Suhrllekha and its commentary by Acharya Mahamati are not available till now. The Turks, who invaded India in the 11th and 12th centuries, not only burnt the biggest library at Nalanda University, but also destroyed most of the Buddhist literature. Fortunately, these two texts had been translated into Tibetan language in Tibet during the 8th century, where they became very popular and famous. Particularly, Suhrllekha was highly popular among householders and Government officials who were not well versed in deep philosophical studies. Therefore, all the Tibetan scholars from various traditional orders have written many commentaries and notes on this text. Only one Indian commentary by Acharya Mahamati is available in Tibetan translation.
