Life has a way of thwarting our plans, leaving even the most sainted of
us frustrated and fearful at times. But losing our cool causes more
problems than it solves. So when people and circumstances conspire
against us, how can we douse the white-hot fires of rage? How can we
break the cycle of hurt, anger, and revenge to find inner peace and
coexist peacefully with the world? In Love Your Enemies Salzberg and Thurman draw on ancient spiritual wisdom, modern
psychology, and the latest neuroscience to guide us in dealing with
troublesome people and situations, and overcoming the real source of our
distress, our deep-seated self-centeredness and self-hatred. The book
offers practical methods for transforming our relationship to our outer,
inner, secret, and super-secret enemies. Thurman brings to life
traditional wisdom teachings such as Shantidevas advice on replacing
anger with patience, while Salzberg mines her experiences as a leading
teacher of insight and loving kindness meditation to relate real-life
examples of putting the teachings into practice. Together, the two perspectives give us a well-rounded course in conquering our outer and inner enemies.
Sharon Salzberg is a teacher of meditation for more than 30 years, having shared in a
plenary panel with Nobel Laureates His Holiness the Dalai Lama and Jose
Ramos Horta. She is also co-founder of the Insight Meditation Society,
the Forest Refuge, and the Barre Center for Buddhist Studies. Today,
she leads intensive retreats worldwide, as well as a variety of
workshops and classes.
Robert Thurman, recently hailed by the New York Times as the leading American
expert on Tibetan Buddhism, was the first American to have been
ordained a Tibetan Buddhist monk and is a personal friend of the Dalai
Lama for over 40 years. He is Jey Tsong Khapa Professor of the
Indo-Tibetan Buddhist studies at Colombia University, President of Tibet
House U.S., a non-profit organization dedicated to the preservation and
promotion of Tibetan Civilization.
