This book contains fourteen original texts in Tibetan with an English translation by Khenpo Gawang Rinpoche and Gerry Wiener. Five are from the Dunhuang Cave, which contain the oldest known texts, up to a 20th CE text written by Gendun Chopel.

1) The Biography of the Acharya Padmasambhava found in the texts of the Dunhuang Cave.

2) The Oral Instructions to an Old Man that were Given Pointing a Walking Stick and the Oral Instructions to an Elderly Lady that were Given Pointing a Finger are two short pith dzogchen instructions given by Padmasambhava, Guru Rinpoche, and written down by Yeshe Tsogyal for future generations.This excerpt from The Seven Chapter Supplication to Padmasambhava is a pointing out instruction concerning the objects of the five senses (outer) and the mind (inner).

4) The Aspiration Prayer of the Meaning of the Inseparable Ground, Path, and Fruition of Manjushri: Great Completion Known as the Self-Radiance of Vajra Awareness-Emptiness by Mipham Rinpoche is a beautifully written short exposition on the ground, path, and result of dzogchen.

5) The Way of the Old Realized Ones, The Instructions Pointing Out the Nature of Mind: The Torch that Dispels Darkness by Mipham Rinpoche, was written, using words that are easy to understand but profound, for those who do not exert themselves greatly in study and contemplation but still want to meditate on the nature of mind.

6) The Meditation and Recitation of the Six Syllable Avalokiteshvara by Mipham Rinpoche is a short practice that is in accord with the nature of mind which is the ultimate Avalokiteshvara.

7) Instructions on Practicing the Essence of the Buddhadharma by Gendun Chopel, is a short and concise description of the path of practice from the beginnings through dzogchen.

8) An Explanation Consisting of One Shloka composed by Acharya Nagarjuna This teaching of Nagarjuna is only found in the Dunhuang Manuscripts.

9) The Cuckoo of Awareness Tantra by Samantrabhadra is the thirty-first chapter of the All-Creating Monarch Tantra. The Duhuang edition contains a commentary. The Tingkye edition is also included.

10) The Hidden Small Collection by the Hidden Buddha, Acharya Buddhagupta is from the 1000 year old Duhuang collection. It belongs to the category of Atiyoga. Its source is all the scriptures of the mind [section] of enlightenment. Its purpose is to instruct those of supreme intellect.

11) The Sadhana of Achala by Mipham Rinpoche is a pacifying and obstacle removing practice of the protector Achala. This is the unsurpassable antidote to all the obstacles of the maras and so forth and in performing a multitude of enlightened activities.

12) The Noble Wisdom at the Time of Death Sutra is a Mahayana sutra by the Buddha given in the Akanishta realm. The bodhisattva-mahasattva, Ksitigarbha, asked how should one view the time of death of the bodhisattva and this is his answer.

13 and 14) The Sutra Teaching the Ten Intentions (Dunhuang Text) and The Sutra Teaching the Noble Eleven Intentions (Derge Kangyur) by Shakyamuni Buddha. This is the last teaching of the Buddha.
