Kulananda was born in South Africa in 1954 and emigrated to Britain in 1972. He joined the Triratna Buddhist Order in 1977 and spent many years assisting in the development of what is now the Triratna Buddhist Community. Amongst other things, he worked at times as Sangharakshita's secretary; co-founded Windhorse evolution and the Cambridge Buddhist Centre; has been president of various Triratna centres; and is a member of the Preceptors' College. More recently he has worked teaching mindfulness and related approaches in the context of organizational leadership.

Kulananda is the author of The Wheel of Life and Teachers of Enlightenment, both published by Windhorse Publications. Among his other books are Western Buddhism, Principles of Buddhism, Mindfulness in Eight Weeks, and Mind Time, all published by Harper Thorsons.

Kulananda and his wife Dhirangama live in Cambridge, UK.
