Ratana is the Pali word meaning a precious jewel.
Here, Ratana applies to the Buddha, Dharma and the Sangha. In Etymology, the syllable Ra means to attract, Ta means to cross and Na means to lead. Buddha, Dharma and Sangha are collectively called Ratana because they posses virtues that attract the minds of the wise, act as means to cross the ocean of Samsara and they lead to heavens and Nibbana those who seek refuge in them.
