In September, 2000 Khenpo Karthar Rinpoche visited Hartford KTC and taught on Buddha Nature. In an intimate setting, Rinpoche presented teachings that are beneficial for both beginning and advanced practitioners. Beginning with a teaching on the equality of all beings and the origins of the Kagyu lineage in the Samadhiraja Sutra, Rinpoche went on to present clear and profound teachings on the benefits of accumulating and dedicating merit, taking the Nyungnay Vow, and the qualities of Buddha nature. In talk three, Rinpoche presented a spectacular, detailed and accessible talk on emptiness of self and emptiness of phenomena, approaching these topics from the perspective of analytical meditation, Madhyamaka logic and Vajrayana practice. In the afternoon sessions, Rinpoche provided extensive opportunities for questions and answers. Lama Yeshe Gyamtso's translation was superb. Four talks. Although this is vintage video, recorded with a single camera, the tight images of Rinpoche and Lama Yeshe in this intimate setting are clear and quite beautiful.

Buddha's Teachings on Equality and Peace, DVD By: Khenpo Karthar Rinpoche

In this talk Rinpoche teaches extensively on the Buddha's view of equality. Rinpoche explains that from the earliest Hinayana teachings to the profound Vajrayana teachings, Buddha taught that men and women, people of high and low caste, even humans and non-humans, all possess the same potential for enlightenment. Rinpoche also explains the differences among conceptual certainty, meditation experience, and realizing the nature of mind. Finally, Rinpoche shows that the teachings of Buddha provide the basis for genuine peace in the world. This teaching concludes with a question and answer exchange during which the topic of gender equality is again explored.

Gampopa’s Garland of Pearls, Part 1, DVD By: Khenpo Karthar Rinpoche
Our Price: $60.00 Members Price: $54.00

The Garland of Pearls is a collection of Gampopa’s Assembly Dharmas which are transcripts of talks on the essential meaning of dharma that Gampopa gave to his assembled students. These transcripts were carefully made and collected by Gampopa’s nephew, Dakpo Tsultrim Nyingpo. Each assembly talk is about 30 minutes long and presents a concise and accessible teaching on a complete path of dharma practice. Hearing these transcripts read and commented upon by Khenpo Karhar Rinpoche and translated by Lama Yeshe Gyamtso conveys a genuine sense of what it must have been like to attend these teachings back in the twelfth century. The intimacy and the casual yet very direct style of Gampopa’s teaching comes through very clearly. Q & A sessions at the end of two talks allowed students to gain further understanding of these 900-year-old-yet-timeless teachings in the modern day context.

Padampa Sangye’s 80 Verses of Advice to the People of Dingri, DVD By: Khenpo Karthar Rinpoche

After achieving supreme attainment in India, Mahasidda Padampa Sangye traveled to Tibet and settled in Dingri in the Xizang Province near Mt. Everest. After teaching in that area for many years, Padampa Sangye returned to India. Prior to leaving Dingri he taught eighty verses of advice (sometimes split into 100 verses) to his disciples. These verses provide profound advice relevant to any dharma practitioner. The first verse summarizes the entire set of teachings, advising us not to waste our lives on mundane pursuits, but rather to direct all of our resources to practicing the dharma. The verses then begin by explaining why it makes no sense to hold on to our attachments to mundane possessions, family, friends and even our body, as well as why we should cultivate loving kindness and compassion for all sentient beings. These introductory verses lay the groundwork for an extensive and profound teaching on the only thing we can rely on -- the ultimate nature of mind, thoughts, emotions and phenomena. These verses use many skillful analogies to explain the ultimate nature. This teaching is brilliant. The talk on the verses that explain the ultimate nature merits repeated viewing. Lama Yeshe Gyamtso provides superb translation.

In the past, there were innumerable siddhas in India and Tibet. But now, though the techniques of Vajrayana are still profound and effective, there seem to be comparatively few. The problem is not with the power and availability of the teachings - it is in how we practice them, especially our motivation for practice. If the main condition for awakening, bodhichitta, is absent, none of our practices will be effective. Karma Chagme Rinpoche left us this impassioned advice: "All tantrikas of the future, if you don't understand this, even though you spend your whole life doing sadhana practice - forget about attaining buddhahood in one lifetime. This won't even lead you in the direction of awakening." Khenpo Karhar Rinpoche explains Chapter 6,7,8 and 9 of the Retreat Manual composed by the renowned 17th century Kagyu Master, Karma Chagme Rinpoche, which treat the subjects of refuge, bodhichitta and protecting others through one's practice in a poignant commentary on the essential basis of practice.
