Bliss of Inner Fire
Bliss of Inner Fire: Heart Practice of the Six Yogas of Naropa
By: Thubten Yeshe
Our Price: $16.95
Members Price: $15.26

Following Je Tsongkhapa's ( 1357-1419 A.D.) text Having the Three Convictions, Lama Yeshe introduces the renowned Six Yogas of Naropa, focusing mainly on the first of these six, the practice of inner fire (tummo). Mastery of inner fire quickly brings the mind to its most refined and penetrating state-the experience of clear light, an extraordinarily powerful state of mind that is unequaled in its ability to directly realize ultimate reality.
Lama Yeshe felt that twentieth-century Westerners could easily grasp the often misunderstood ideas of this esoteric tradition: "We really need tantra these days because there is a tremendous explosion of delusion and distraction...and we need the atomic energy of inner fire to blast us out of our delusion."

by Tsong Khapa
Our Price: $62.00

The present work is the cornerstone of our Jey Yabsey Sungbum Collection, a subset of our Treasury of the Buddhist Sciences series. Compromised of the collected work of Tsong Khapa Losang Drakpa (1357-1419) and His Spiritual Sons, Gyaltsap Darma Rinchen (1364-1432) and Khendrup Gelek Pelsang (1385-1438), this Collection is a voluminous set of independent Tibetan treatises and super commentaries, all based on the thousands of works contained in the Kangyur and Tengyur Collections.
The Brilliant Illumination of the Lamp of the Five Stages (Rim Inga rab tu gsal ba'i sgron me) is Tsong Khampa's most important commentary on the perfection stage practices of the Esoteric  Community  (Guhyasamaja), the Tantra he considered fundamental for the practice of the "Father Tantra" class of Unexcelled Yoga Tantras. It draws heavily on Nagarjuna's Five Stages (Pancakrama) and Aryadeva's Lamp the integrates the Practices (Caryamelapakapradipa),as well as a vast range of perfection stage works included in the Tibetan Kangyur and Tengyur collections. It is an important work for both scholars and practitioners. An annotated translation is supplemented with extensive glossaries and other support material. The status of reasoning and formally stated philosophical proofs is a fundamental problem in the Madhyamaka philosophy of India and Tibet, one which became a decisive criteria dividing the two major later sub-schools of Nagarjuna's tradition. The present work investigates the critique of the so-called "autonomous proofs" (svatantra) by two major exponents of the Prasangika sub-school of the Madhyamaka in India and Tibet, Candrakirti (ca. 600-665) and Tsong kha pa (1357-1419). Candrakirti initially developed his critique in the Prasannapada, his highly influential commentary on Nagarjuna's basic treatise. In Tibet, Tsong kha pa was one of the most important interpreters of Candrakirti, and he substantiated his own Madhyamaka views in an original but in many ways convincing manner. His treatment of this critique is an important and highly characteristic example of his approach and work. Inhalt: Tsong kha pa's Unique Understanding of Selflessness - Tsong kha pa's Method of Demonstrating Selflessness - The Meaning of the Term Svatantra - Candrakirti's Critique of Svatantra-reasoning in the Prasannapada - Tsong kha pa's Critique of Svatantra-reasoning in the Lam rim chen mo and the Legs bshad snying po - Table of the Discussions of Svatantra-reasoning "What makes this study especially valuable is above all the author's critical analysis of the contents of each discussion by Candrakirti and Tsong kha pa. [à] Yotsuya really deserves the gratitude of scholars for the publication of this elaborate work Indo-Iranian Journal. (Franz Steiner 1999)

Dependent Arising and Emptiness
Dependent Arising and Emptiness, A Tibetan Buddhist Interpretation of Madhyamika Philosophy
By: Napper, Elizabeth
Our Price: $29.95
Members Price: $26.96

Emptiness and dependent-arising are two core concepts within Buddhism. An understanding of their integral relationship allows us to see how the Madhyamika school, the preeminent school of Buddhist philosophy in Tibet, can completely deny any inherent ontological status to the world around us while maintaining a valid presentation of reality based on ethical principles. The brilliant scholar and yogi Dzong-kha-ba, founder of the Ge-luk-ba lineage, demonstrated how these two core concepts are not only compatible, but are actually mutually contingent.
Along with a translation of the special insight (vipasyana) section of Dzong-kha-ba's Great Exposition of the Stages of the Path (lam rim chen mo), Napper provides an extensive introduction that contrasts the Ge-luk-ba view of emptiness to that of Western scholars and a translation of four interwoven commentaries on the text.

Meditative States in Tibetan Buddhism
By: Lati Rinbochay
Our Price: $15.95
Members Price: $14.36

Meditative States gives a vivid and detailed account of the meditative practices necessary to develop a calm, alert mind that is capable of penetrating the depths of reality.
In this precise and lucid work, two prominent modern Tibetan lamas-Lati Rinbochay and Denma Locho Rinbochay-present comprehensive explanations of the mental states attained through meditation.
Discussing step-by-step the practice of meditation itself, they provide us with practical antidotes to the various obstacles that may arise in meditation. At the same time, they intersperse their presentations with captivating descriptions of the sometimes fantastic, sometimes astonishing cosmology that provides the background and context for Buddhist practice. Their erudite and experienced expositions are enlivened as well by their compassion and humor, so typical of the Tibetan scholastic and yogic traditions.
Drawing on classic texts by Asanga, Maitreya, and Dzongka-ba on the topics of the meditative states known as the concentrations and the formless absorptions, the two lamas bring alive the learning experience of the Buddhist culture of Tibet.

By: Sparham, Gareth
Our Price: $23.50
Members Price: $21.15

Tsong kha pa's Commentary on the YOGACARA DOCTRINE OF MIND

This book is of particular interest because it shows the presence of the Yogacara (Mind Only) school in Tibet. It is well known that the Madhyamaka school flourished in Tibet, but less well known that Yogacara doctrines were also studied and practiced. The former school stresses the inexpressible ultimate; the latter, the natural luminosity of mind. This is probably the best introduction to the distinctive eight consciousnesses systems of Yogacara. It also makes understandable the different meanings of the profound alaya-vijnana (the storehouse consciousness, or basis of all) that is the pivotal eighth consciousness in their system.

The Tibetan tradition known as the Six Yogas of Naropa is one of the most popular tantric systems with all schools of Tibetan Buddhism. Structured and arranged by the eleventh-century Indian masters Tilopa and Naropa from various Buddhist tantric legacies, this system of yogic practice was carried to Tibet by Marpa the Translator a generation later. These "six yogas" - inner heat, illusory body, clear light, consciousness transference, forceful projection and bardo yoga - continue to be one of the most important living meditation traditions in the Land of Snow.
This collection of readings on the six yogas contains important texts on this esoteric doctrine, including original Indian works by Tilopa and Naropa, and Tibetan writings by Tsongkhapa the Great, Gyalwa Wensapa, the First Panchen Lama and Lama Jey Sherab Gyatso. Readings discusses the practices, their context and the historical continuity of this most important tradition, which is said to bring full enlightenment in one lifetime.

Self, Reality and Reason in Tibetan Philosophy
By: Thupten Jinpa
Our Price: $39.95
Members Price: $112.46

Thupten Jinpa explores the historical and intellectual context of Tsongkhapa's philosophy and addresses the critical issues related to questions of development and originality in Tsongkhapa's thought. The work also deals extensively with one of Tsongkhapa's primary concerns, namely his attempts to demonstrate that the Middle Way philosophy's de-constructive analysis does not negate the reality of the everyday world. The central focus of the study is the question of the existence and the nature of self. This is explored in terms of both Tsongkhapa's de-construction of the self and his re-constructive theories of the person. Finally, the work explores the concept of reality that emerges in Tsongkhapa's philosophy, and deals with his understanding of the relationship between critical reasoning, no-self, and religious experience. The interpretations of Tsongkhapa's thought are grounded in the original works, thus enabling Tsongkhapa to speak, as far as possible, in his own voice, while articulating his philosophical thought in language familiar to contemporary western philosophy.

Stairway to Nirvana: A Study of the Twenty Samghas Based on the Works of Tsong kha pa
By: James B. Apple
Our Price: $75.00
Members Price: $75.00

James B. Apple examines one of the formative subjects in traditional Buddhist studies, the Twenty Varieties of the Samgha. The Samgha (community) is one of the Three Jewels (Buddha, Dharma, Samgha) universally revered by all Buddhists. While the Samgha is generally understood as the community of Buddhist ordained monks and nuns, along with lay adherents, the Twenty
Varieties of the Samgha concerns an exemplary community of the twenty types of Noble Beings (arya-pudgala) who embody the Buddha’s teachings. Focusing on the interpretation of the Samgha given by the fourteenth-century Tibetan scholar Tsong kha pa, Apple provides a comprehensive typology and analysis of the stages through which Noble Beings pass in their progress toward enlightenment through multiple lifetimes in various cosmological realms. He explains the cosmographic formations and complex structures of Buddhist spiritual cultivation, illustrating how Tibetan and Indian Buddhists conceptualize all possible states on the path to enlightenment.

A Commentary on the Lamrim Chenmo, Vol 3: The Way of the Bodhisattva,

Geshe Lhundub Sopa’s Steps on the Path to Enlightenment is a landmark commentary on what is perhaps the most elaborate and elegant Tibetan presentation of the Buddhist path, Tsongkhapa’s monumental Lamrim Chenmo. In this third volume of five, readers are acquainted with the bodhisattva’s path and the altruistic desire to make service to others the driving force of spiritual development.

It begins with an explanation of what distinguishes the Mahayana practitioner from other Buddhists. The nature of bodhichitta is described in depth, and Geshe Sopa then provides a detailed, contemporary commentary on the two methods to develop this attitude: the “sevenfold cause-and-effect personal instructions” based on the teachings of Atisha and the later Kadampa lineage, and the “training to exchange self and other” based on Shantideva’s Engaging in the Bodhisattva’s Deeds. While bodhichitta’s significance in Mahayana Buddhism is universally known, this attitude alone is not sufficient in the quest for complete enlightenment. A practitioner must devote oneself to the performance of actions motivated by bodhichitta, called the bodhisattva perfections.

Tantric Ethics, An Explanation of the Precepts for Buddhist Varjayana Practice
By: Tsongkhapa
Our Price: $16.95
Members Price: $15.26

Central to Buddhism of Tibet are the esoteric techniques of the tantric, or Vajrayana, tradition. These practices involve recitation of matra and complex visualizations and are passed from teacher to student during sacred initiation ceremonies. Tantra constitutes the fabric of a Tibetan Buddhist's daily practice, but cannot be succesful without adherence to the tantric precepts, the code of ethical behavior for aspirants on the Vajrayana path. The tantric vows are the highest of the three complementary sets of vows in Tibetan Buddhism, following the Pratimoksha (monastic) and Mahayana vows.
The scholar and tantric adept Tsongkhapa (1357-1419), one of the greatest philosophers produced by Tibet's Buddhist culture, composed works on every aspect of Buddhist philosophy and practice. This book contains a translation of his Fruit Clusters of Siddhis, an explanation of the tantric vows, and provides a clear explanation of the nature of each vow and the criteria for determining when a downfall has occured.
Teachings on Je Tsongkhapas Three Principal Aspects of the Path
By: Dalai Lama
Our Price: $7.00
Members Price: $6.70

Je Tsongkhapa (1357~1419) was one of the greatest commentator in the history of Buddhism and has the dexterity to compress profound and vast ideas in a single poem. The Three Principal Aspects of the Path is one such example. This text containing fourteen verses was taught to Tsakho Onpo Ngawang Dakpa in a place called Gyamo Rong in eastern Tibet.

The Three Principal Aspects of the Path are the basis of all the sutric and tantric practices that you undertake. When one's practice is influenced by renunciation, it becomes a cause for achieving liberation (Nirvana), when it is influenced by Bodhichitta it becomes a cause for achieving omniscience (Buddhahood), and when it is
influenced by correct view it becomes an antidote to the cycle of existence (Samsara).

The Three Principal Aspects of the Path are the essence of all the scriptures of the Buddha. The meaning of the Buddha's teachings and commentaries on them are included in the stages of the path of the three individuals, and these in turn are included in the Three Principal Aspects of the Path.

Je Tsongkhapa's masterpiece appears here with a commentary by the greatest commentator and foremost teacher on Buddhism of our time His Holiness the XIV Dalai Lama.

In fourteenth- and fifteenth-century Tibet there was great ferment about what makes enlightenment possible, since systems of self-liberation must show what factors preexist in the mind that allow for transformation into a state of freedom from suffering.  This controversy about the nature of mind, which persists to the present day, raises many questions.
This book first presents the final exposition of special insight by Tsong-kha-pa, the founder of the Ge-luk-pa order of Tibetan Buddhism, in his Medium-Length Exposition of the Stages of the Path, as well as the sections on the object of negation and on the two truths in his Illumination of the Thought: Extensive Explanation of (Chandrakirti's) "Supplement to (Nagarjuna's) ‘Treatise on the Middle."'  It then details the views of his predecessor Dol-po-pa Shay-rap Gyel-tsen, the seminal author of philosophical treatises of the Jo-nang-pa order, as found in his Mountain Doctrine, followed by an analysis of Tsong-kha-pa's reactions.  By contrasting the two systems- Dol-po-pa's doctrine of other-emptiness and Tsong-kha-pa's doctrine of self-emptiness- both views emerge more clearly, contributing to a fuller picture of reality as viewed in Tibetan Buddhism.

Tsongkhapa (1357-1419), the author of The Great Treatise on the Stages of the Path to Enlightenment and the teacher of the First Dalai Lama, is renowned as one of the greatest scholar-saints that Tibet has ever produced. He composed his poetic Praise for Dependent Relativity the very morning that he abandoned confusion and attained the final view, the clear realization of emptiness that is the essence of wisdom. English monk Graham Woodhouse, a longtime student of Buddhism who lives near the Dalai Lamas residence in northern India, translates Tsongkhapas celebrated text and conveys for modern readers the teachings he received from his teacher, the late Venerable Losang Gyatso.

The Middle Way is a central idea for all Buddhists, yet its definition varies across Buddhist cultures. In Tibetan Buddhism, the interpretation of what are called the two truths — the truth of conventional appearances and the ultimate truth of emptiness — is especially contentious. This comparative analysis examines the differing approaches toward the Middle Way taken by the two great Buddhist scholars, Tsongkhapa and Gorampa. It demonstrates how philosophical positions have dramatic implications both for how one approaches Buddhist practice and for how one ultimately understands enlightenment itself.
