Art of Happiness at Work, Audio CDs By: Dalai Lama, Howard Cutter

Our Price: $29.95 Members Price: $26.96

|
|

For the first time since The Art of Happiness, His Holiness the Dalai Lama has teamed up with psychiatrist Howard Cutler to continue the discussion about what makes life meaningful.
In conversations with the Dalai Lama over the past several years, Howard Cutler has asked the questions we all want answered about how to find happiness in the place we spend most of our time -- work. Beginning with the basic need to find satisfaction in our careers, Dr. Cutler questions His Holiness about the nature of work. In psychiatry and according to the Dalai Lama, our motivation for working determines our level of satisfaction. The Art of Happiness at Work explores these three levels of focus:
• Survival: focus on salary, stability, food and clothing • Career: focus on advancement • Calling: focus on work as a higher purpose
Dr. Cutler probes the Dalai Lama's wisdom by posing these questions: What is the relationship between self-awareness and work? How does lack of freedom at work affect our levels of happiness? How can we deal with boredom or lack of challenge? Job change and unemployment? How much of our misery comes from our identity being tied up with work?
Dr. Cutler walks us through the Dalai Lama's reasoning so that we may know how to apply his wisdom to daily life. The Art of Happiness at Work is an invaluable source of strength and peace for anyone who earns a living.

Blending common sense and modern psychiatry, The Art of Happiness in a Troubled World applies Buddhist tradition to twenty-first-century struggles in a relevant way. The result is a wise approach to dealing with human problems that is both optimistic and realistic, even in the most challenging times.
How can we expect to find happiness and meaning in our lives when the modern world seems such an unhappy place?
His Holiness the Dalai Lama has suffered enormously throughout his life, yet he always seems to be smiling and serene. How does he do it? In The Art of Happiness in a Troubled World, Dr. Cutler walks readers through the Dalai Lama's philosophy on how to achieve peace of mind and come to terms with life's inherent suffering. Together, the two examine the roots of many of the problems facing the world and show us how we can approach these calamities in a way that alleviates suffering, and helps us along in our personal quests to be happy. Through stories, meditations, and in-depth conversations, the Dalai Lama teaches readers to identify the cultural influences and ways of thinking that lead to personal unhappiness, making sense of the hardships we face personally, as well as the afflictions suffered by others.

In September, 2000 Khenpo Karthar Rinpoche visited Hartford KTC and taught on Buddha Nature. In an intimate setting, Rinpoche presented teachings that are beneficial for both beginning and advanced practitioners. Beginning with a teaching on the equality of all beings and the origins of the Kagyu lineage in the Samadhiraja Sutra, Rinpoche went on to present clear and profound teachings on the benefits of accumulating and dedicating merit, taking the Nyungnay Vow, and the qualities of Buddha nature. In talk three, Rinpoche presented a spectacular, detailed and accessible talk on emptiness of self and emptiness of phenomena, approaching these topics from the perspective of analytical meditation, Madhyamaka logic and Vajrayana practice. In the afternoon sessions, Rinpoche provided extensive opportunities for questions and answers. Lama Yeshe Gyamtso's translation was superb. Four talks. This recording is edited in a "Mainly English" edition.

“The Buddha was as mortal as you and I, yet he attained enlightenment and was raised to the rank of an immortal. The miracle is that he got there following a heart as human as yours and mine, and just as vulnerable.” - from the Introduction Bestselling author Deepak Chopra brings the Buddha back to life in this gripping account of the young prince who abandoned his inheritance to discover his true calling. This iconic journey changed the world forever, and the truths revealed continue to influence every corner of the globe today. A young man in line for the throne is trapped in his father’s kingdom and yearns for the outside world. Betrayed by those closest to him, Siddhartha abandons his palace and princely title. Finally alone and face-to-face with his demons, he becomes a wandering monk and embarks on a spiritual fast that carries him to the brink of death. Ultimately recognizing his inability to conquer his body and mind by sheer force, Siddhartha transcends his physical pain and achieves enlightenment. Although we recognize Buddha today as an icon of peace and serenity, his life story was a tumultuous and spellbinding affair filled with love and sex, murder and loss, struggle and surrender. From the rocky terrain of the material world to the summit of the spiritual one, Buddha entertains and inspires - ultimately leading us closer to understanding the true nature of life and ourselves.

This extraordinary beautiful teaching was given by Khenpo Karthar Rinpoche during his first historic visit to Hartford KTC in 1998. This teaching on Chenrezig meditation practice is based on the Fifteenth Karmapa’s commentary, A Continuous Rain of Blessings: A Commentary on the Meditation and Mantra Recitation for the Great Compassionate One. The commentary begins by explaining the nature and significance of Chenrezig. We learn that Chenrezig represents supreme compassion for all sentient beings and that the practice awakens loving kindness and compassion in practitioners. Chenrezig practice tames negativity and is widespread in the formerly aggressive Tibetan culture. Tibetan children now seem to be born knowing the Chenrezig Mantra, Om Mani Padme Hum. Following the introduction, the practice is presented in six topics, beginning with the preparation of taking refuge and generating bodhicitta. The second and third topics present the visualization and mantra recitation of the main practice. Chenrezig is visualized as the embodiment of the essence of all sources of refuge. The visualization is explained in moving detail, emphasizing the meaning of the practice and the faith, aspiration and confidence of the practitioner. The conclusion of the practice is explained in the fourth and fifth topics which address bringing appearances to the path and dedicating the merit. The sixth and final topic presents the benefits of the practice. This wonderful teaching was translated by Lama Yeshe Gyamtso.
