Approaching the Great Perfection
By: Sam van Schaik
Our Price: $29.95

Dzogchen, the Great Perfection, is the highest meditative practice of the Nyingma school of Tibetan Buddhism. Approaching the Great Perfection looks at a seminal figure of this lineage, Jigme Lingpa, an eighteenth-century scholar and meditation master whose cycle of teachings , the Longchen Nyingtig, has been handed down through generations as a complete path to enlightenment. Ten of Jigme Lingpa's texts are presented here, along with extensive analysis by van Schaik of a core within Buddhism: Does enlightenment develop gradually, or does it come all at once? Though these two positions are often portrayed by modern scholars as entrenched polemical views, van Schaik explains that both tendencies are present within each of the Tibetan Buddhist schools.

Nowadays there are two principal philosophical traditions followed by Tibetan Lamas. The first is found among the Sarmapas, or Newer Schools, which employ the Prasangika Madhyamaka view of Chandrakirti, not only in explicating the real meaning of the Sutra system but also in their interpretation of the Tantras. The second is found among the two Older Schools, the Nyingmapa and the Bonpo, which emphasize the Dzogchen point of view in elucidating their understanding of the Higher Tantras. Among the Older Schools, Dzogchen, “the Great Perfection”, which lies beyond the process of Tantric transformation, is regarded as the quintessential teaching of the Buddha, pointing directly to the Nature of Mind and its intrinsic awareness, known as Rigpa.

Dzog Chen and Zen
By: Namkhai Norbu, Chogyal

In this text from a lecture originally given in 1981, Norbu Rinpoche discusses the relationship between Zen Buddhism and the various forms of Buddhism that developed in Tibet. Both are direct, non-gradual approaches to Buddhist teaching that continue to be practiced in the West.

"The principle of the Dzog-chen teaching is the self-perfectedness, the already-being-perfect of every individual. Self-perfectedness means that the so-called objective is nothing else than the manifestation of the energy of the primordial state of the individual himself. An individual who practices Dzog-chen must possess clear knowledge of the principle of energy and what it means."

By: Jigme Lingpa

Following the recognition of these common truths it continues, leading the spiritual aspirant into refuge in the Three Supreme Jewels and, for a Mahayanist (whose selfless attitude is based on pure love and compassion), into activation of the awakening mind - bodhicitta. The work then unites these meditations with a series of practices exclusive to the tantric path - Vajrasattva purification, mandala offering, union with the spiritual master, the chod practice of cutting duality at its source and so forth.

Eye of the Storm, Vairotsana’s Five Original Transmissions
By: Keith Dowman
Our Price: $16.95

(Foreword by Bhakha Tulku Pema Rigdzin) 'The five texts translated from Tibetan into English in this book are considered the first transmission of Dzogchen Ati to Tibet (Snga 'gyur lnga). They constitute the root and essence of Dzogchen in Tibet -- basic, raw Dzogchen precepts, appropriately styled 'radical Dzogchen'. This is the special, extraordinary teaching of our Nyingma lineage. The great masters have all attained realization through Dzogchen, contemporary masters all owe their status to Dzogchen, and any attainment in the future will be based on the precepts of Dzogchen Ati.'

From the blurb of James Low, author of Simply Being: "Precise and poetic, authentic and elusive, these sweet translations bring the warm breath of the tradition into our daily lives. This book is a major contribution to the exciting spread of Dzogchen in modern times, providing reliable versions of key texts in language which creatively challenges our assumptions. This new work by Keith Dowman is thoughtful, ripe and poignant, rich in the fruit of years of learning, working, experiencing and letting go."

Mahamudra and Atiyoga
By: Giuseppe Baroetto
Our Price: $17.50

Mahamudra and Atiyoga are particular forms of Buddhist spirituality: Mahamudra, the ‘Great Seal’, is considered by Tibetan teachers to be the essence of both the short path and the final instructions that conclude the gradual common and esoteric paths of Buddhist doctrines; Atiyoga or ‘Extreme Union’ represents the Buddhist Dzogchen or ‘Great Completeness’ doctrine. This volume comprises commentaries on and the transliteration of some ancient Tibetan texts, authored by Buddhist mystics and Tantric teachers of Mahamudra and Atiyoga. Translated from the Italian, the book is based on oral instructions received by the author from Tibetan teachers. It discusses the insights of the sacred texts and the commentaries on them with respect to the nature of consciousness and phenomenal existence, meditation on guru and deity, Tantric sexuality, and the introduction to and realization of non-dual awareness. Simple to understand, the commentaries explain the many meanings of the texts and the symbols and images used. They motivate readers to observe for themselves and personally experience the significance of the traditions and the application of their methods of practice. The volume will be useful to all students and scholars of Buddhist studies, particularly of the Buddhist Tantric tradition, and of Tibetan religion and culture.

Old Man Basking in the Sun; Longchenpa's Treasury of Natural Perfection
By: Keith Dowman

Dzogchen is the apotheosis of Tibetan Buddhism and Longchenpa is the pre-eminent master of Dzogchen and one of Tibet's greatest mystical poets. The verses of his Treasury of Natural Perfection (Gnas lugs mdzod) written in the fourteenth century encompass and epitomize the radical precepts of Dzogchen while his auto-commentary elaborates their meaning through a concise prose paraphrase and with illustrative quotations from the Collection of Tantras of the Ancients (Rnying ma rgyud 'bum). Transcending the Tibetan context, Longchenpa delivers a manual of wisdom for all people at all times and shows why the western world has turned to Tibet for its mystical inspiration during the last half century. This transmission of timeless wisdom of the Ancients of Tibet should take its place amongst the world's religious classics. Through the precept 'nonaction' - which is savoured like 'an old man basking in the sun' - Dzogchen teaches the natural perfection of all our experience, and all our lives, just as it is, without need of any alteration. This discipline provides the key not only to our inner enlightenment but to the health and survival of our planet.
