How do you reconcile a commitment to non-violence when faced with violence? Why do the poor often seem happier than the rich? Must a society lose its traditions in order to move into the future? These are some of the questions posed to His Holiness the Dalai Lama by filmmaker and explorer Rick Ray. Ray examines some of the fundamental questions of our time by weaving together observations from his own journeys throughout India and the Middle East, and the wisdom of an extraordinary spiritual leader. This is his story, as told and filmed by Rick Ray during a private visit to his monastery in Dharamsala, India over the course of several months. Also included is rare historical footage as well as footage supplied by individuals who at great personal risk, filmed with hidden cameras within Tibet. Part biography, part philosophy, part adventure and part politics, “10 Questions for The Dalai Lama” conveys more than history and more than answers - it opens a window into the heart of an inspiring man. If you had only one hour, what would you ask?

Amongst White Clouds is an intimate insider’s look at students and masters living in scattered retreats dotting China’s Zhongnan Mountain range. These peaks have reputedly been home to recluses since the time of the Yellow Emperor, some five thousand years ago. It was widely thought that the tradition was all but wiped out, but this film emphatically and beautifully shows us otherwise.
Inspired in part by the noted book by Bill Porter (Red Pine), Road To Heaven: Encounters With Chinese Hermits, and filmed on location in China by American director Edward A. Burger, the film takes an unforgettable journey into the hidden tradition of China’s Buddhist hermit monks.
One of only a few foreigners to have lived and studied with these elusive practitioners, Burger is able, with humor and compassion, to present their tradition, their wisdom, and the hardship and joy of their everyday lives among the clouds.

The Amulet of Mahamudra is an engaging teaching by Thrangu Rinpoche based on two mahamudra texts on that never have been presented in the West. The Amulet of Mahamudra offers both beginning and advanced students accessible and clear approaches to determining the ulitmate nature of mind. The first text, which is profound and concise, was written by Thangtong Gyalpo, an accomplished 13th century siddha known for his extensive activity, having built over 100 iron bridges in Tibet. Several centuries later, Taranatha, the great teacher of the Jonang lineage, wrote a detailed commentary on Thangtong Tulku’s text which is also called The Amulet of Mahamudra. Both texts are based on the Shangpa Kagyu tradition. Thrangu Rinpoche’s teaching is based on both texts which provide a different approach to Mahamudra than the traditional Karma Kagyu mahamudra teachings. This wonderful teaching was translated by David Karma Choepel.

According to the Buddha, the nature of our minds is awareness, clarity and emptiness. If we experience our minds in this way, we live in harmony with all of those around us and experience great inner wisdom, clarity and compassion. But discovering and experiencing this inner essence can be difficult without a method or teachnique. Therefore the Buddha taught tranquility and insight meditation to discover and uncover this nature that we all possess. This weekend seminar teaches both the theory and practice of tranquility and insight meditation based on the Mahamudra meditation teachings of the Karma Kagyu tradition. All four of lama Kathy’s talk s are lively and humorous and have extensive question and answer sessions. 4 DVDs

Over time our shamatha practice can become dull. We feel discouraged and lose confidence. What to do about this? Lama Kathy explains that aspiration and inspiration are the bridge to move from simply pacifying your mind to an interest in awakening. By renewing our connection with the Three Jewels (Buddha- the one who has attained some liberation, Dharma - the means by which the liberation is attained, and Sangha - the skillful bodhistattvas who aid and inspire) and the Three Roots (Lama - the root of blessing, Yiddam - the root of accomplishment, and Protectors - the root of dharma activity) we re-establish a personal resonance with enlightened mind. Lama Kathy’s accessible and engaging teaching provides skillful methods for renewing this connection through verses, practices, inspiring stories, thoughts, prayers and words. Lama Kathy’s public talk on The Core of Self Worth is also included in this DVD set.

In this extensive yet lively teaching, Rinpoche provides commentary on the bardo teachings of Padmasambhava using a text by the great terton, Karma Lingpa. In September, 2000 Khenpo Karthar Rinpoche visited Hartford KTC and taught on Buddha Nature. In an intimate setting, Rinpoche presented teachings that are beneficial for both beginning and advanced practitioners. Beginning with a teaching on the equality of all beings and the origins of the Kagyu lineage in the Samadhiraja Sutra, Rinpoche went on to present clear and profound teachings on the benefits of accumulating and dedicating merit, taking the Nyungnay Vow, and the qualities of Buddha nature. In talk three, Rinpoche presented a spectacular, detailed and accessible talk on emptiness of self and emptiness of phenomena, approaching these topics from the perspective of analytical meditation, Madhyamaka logic and Vajrayana practice. In the afternoon sessions, Rinpoche provided extensive opportunities for questions and answers. Lama Yeshe Gyamtso's translation was superb. Four talks. Although this is vintage video, recorded with a single camera, the tight images of Rinpoche and Lama Yeshe in this intimate setting are clear and quite beautiful.

In the Buddha Maitreya's Differentiating the Middle from the Extremes, the "middle" is the Middle-way and the two extremes are nihilism and eternalism. The present Buddha, of course, is the Shakyamuni Buddha, and Maitreya will be the next, future Buddha. Maitreya is known for giving the world the Five Treatises of Maitreya. These teachings are particularly precious because they represent the third turning of the wheel of dharma (with the Four Noble Truths teachings being the first turning and Nagarjuna’s vast teachings on emptiness being the second turning). This text is particularly close to Thrangu Rinpoche because it expounds the Shentong view and Thrangu Rinpoche has long been a well-recognized master of this point of view. In these recordings Rinpoche comments upon this text in great detail and provides ample opportunity for questions and answers. Translated by David Karma Choephel.

In this talk Rinpoche teaches extensively on the Buddha's view of equality. Rinpoche explains that from the earliest Hinayana teachings to the profound Vajrayana teachings, Buddha taught that men and women, people of high and low caste, even humans and non-humans, all possess the same potential for enlightenment. Rinpoche also explains the differences among conceptual certainty, meditation experience, and realizing the nature of mind. Finally, Rinpoche shows that the teachings of Buddha provide the basis for genuine peace in the world. This teaching concludes with a question and answer exchange during which the topic of gender equality is again explored.

The United States, primarily a Judeo-Christian nation until recently, now encompasses theological groups relatively unknown in the early days of the republic. Buddhism -- the world's fourth largest religion after Christianity, Islam and Hinduism -- has been steadily gaining adherents in America.
THE BUDDHA, a two-hour documentary from Emmy Award winner David Grubin, relates the life of the Indian sage who famously gained enlightenment as he sat beneath a fig tree two-and-a-half millennia ago. This film tells the Buddha's story through painting and sculptures by some of the world's greatest artists and tracks his biography across the sweeping landscapes of northern India.
The testimony of contemporary Buddhists, from Pulitzer Prize-winning poet W.S. Merwin to the Dalai Lama, provide insight into the ancient narrative of the man who never claimed to be God or God's emissary, but merely a human being who, in a world of unavoidable pain and suffering, had achieved a serenity that others, too, could find.
This documentary tells the story of his life, a journey especially relevant in our own times.

The Venerable Chogyam Trungpa Rinpoche was born in the province of Kham in eastern Tibet in 1939. When he was just thirteen months old, he was recognized as a major tulku, or incarnate teacher. At the age of eight, Trungpa Rinpoche received ordination as a novice monk. Following this, he engaged in intensive study and practice of the traditional monastic disciplines, including traditional Tibetan poetry and monastic dance. His primary teachers were Jamgon Kongtul of Sechen and Khenpo Gangshar—leading teachers in the Nyingma and Kagyu lineages. In 1958, at the age of eighteen, Trungpa Rinpoche completed his studies, receiving the degrees of kyorpön (doctor of divinity) and khenpo (master of studies). He also received full monastic ordination. The late 1950s were a time of great upheaval in Tibet. As it became clear that the Chinese communists intended to take over the country by force, many people, both monastic and lay, fled the country. Trungpa Rinpoche spent many harrowing months trekking over the Himalayas (described in his book, Born in Tibet). After narrowly escaping capture by the Chinese, he at last reached India in 1959.
Trungpa Rinpoche composed the doha titled A Symphony of Great Bliss at the age of nineteen while he was fleeing from Tibet, most likely in the area of Kongpo. This delightful and profound doha presents the view, path and fruition of Mahamudra in language that is both colorful and instructive. Thrangu Rinpoche's commentary on this text provides insight into the circumstances surrounding this doha and teaches the meaning of the doha with clarity and precision.
Trungpa Rinpoche was a close dharma brother of Thrangu Rinpoche, and this long close friendship was the inspiration for Thrangu Rinpoche's search for and teaching of this doha, lost in the archives since the 1960's.

"Creating Buddhas: The Making and Meaning of Fabric Thangkas" is the story of a western woman who became a fabric thangka maker. Now, with great love and devotion, she is bringing the gift of fabric thangka to our culture.
Fabric thangka is a silk embroidered and appliquéd art form in Tibetan Buddhism and is also known as Applique Thangka, Brocade Thangka, and Silk Thangka. Fabric thangka is so rare that in some places it is only seen once a year, and then for only for a few hours.
Trained in Dharamsala, India for nine years, Leslie Rinchen-Wongmo is one of the few female makers in world and one of the only fabric thangka makers in the west. This film also explores Leslie’s life-changing journey of discovering fabric thangka, her apprenticeship in Dharmasala, India, the step-by-step by process of producing a fabric thangka, and the history and spiritual importance in Tibetan Buddhism. Through this film, we see her produce a thangka of the female Buddha Tara. In a sense, Leslie is like Tara. She became a master of a male tradition and we see fabric thangka through feminine eyes.

At the edge of the Millennium, The Dalai Lama of Tibet invited 40 of the West’s leading, most innovative thinkers in their respective fields to his residence tucked away in the Himalayan mountains of Northern India to discuss the world’s problems and how we can solve them. What transpired was unexpected and powerful, and was captured by an 18 person, 5 camera film crew. The Wakan Foundation for the Arts took its 18 person crew to India and shot more than 140 hours of video footage during the week-long meeting and exploration of the future of mankind-- enough gripping and beautiful footage to make a powerful and cinematic documentary. The resulting feature-length documentary, Dalai Lama Renaissance, has already received a very positive response, and will be widely released and distributed in the second half of 2008. This DVD is the latest release in a series of ongoing reissues that bring the work of the Dalai Lama to a wider audience. These films will form part of a unique and groundbreaking series of films that will be welcomed the world over not only by those interested in Buddhism but fellow travellers on the road to enlightenment.
How do we deal with negative emotions? This is an important topic one that brings up the question of what's positive and what's negative. Is there anything that's absolutely negative or absolutely positive? I don't really know. Everything is interdependent and everything has different aspects. One observer looks at something from this angle and sees one picture, but even the same observer, when they go to the other side, sees things from a different angle.
Why, then, does each person have a different view of the world? Well, it's because each of us looks at the world from a different angle. Even the same object looks different even to the same person. Therefore, what is the distinction and definition of good and bad? I don't know. Even an ant doesn't analyze that. But, somehow, an ant knows that something that helps its life is good and so considers it good; and something that's a danger to life it feels that is bad and so it runs around it.
So, perhaps we can say that [the issue of good or bad] is based on survival. We want comfort and happiness. And so something that's helpful for survival, we consider that good: that's positive. Something that attacks us and which we feel is a danger to our survival we feel that that's bad: that's negative.

In this series of talks on Buddha Nature given in May of 2010 at Hartford KTC in Hartford, Connecticut, Lama Yeshe Gyamtso clearly lays out both the process by which we develop obscurations and the path of practice that allows us to overcome them. He explains that while it is difficult to experience the emptiness of our relative experience, we can directly experience our own mind. This quest to search for minds nature is precisely the goal of our meditation. It is not enough, however, to simply find it and rest in it. We cant just limit our practice to glimpses of our minds nature. We still need other practices. We must examine our mind closely through observation and analysis to thoroughly experience the nature of mind. Lama Yeshe made it clear that we should not view Buddha Nature as something distant or unattainable. It is not a hidden treasure, and it is not concealed from us. Once we gain confidence in our Buddha Nature we must then be patient and diligent. Through our practice and the guidance of our teacher we will experience gradual intensification of our realization and gain confidence that abiding in that realization will lead to liberation. Included in these talks are several excellent group meditation practices led by Lama Yeshe which were designed to facilitate investigation of our Buddha Nature. Five talks on five DVDs.

In the Third Turning of the Wheel of Dharma, Buddha taught the Shentong view that emptiness is not merely empty, but rather is endowed with the essence of wisdom. This is Buddha-nature. In this teaching, Thrangu Rinpoche emphasizes the importance of cultivating certainty in both the Rangtong (self-empty) and Shentong (other-empty) views as a necessary foundation for practicing the deity practices of the creation stage of secret mantra as well as the completion practices of Mahamudra and Dzogchen. Dolpopa Sherab Gyaltsen's Mountain Doctrine teaches the view (Buddhan-nature). This is what is most needed in order to engage in practices to realize the nature of mind. Dolpopa presents the nature of the ground, how to practice the path and what result is attained through the practice. Doplopa teaches the view through inference rather than through direct experience. Rather than presenting practice instructions, Dolpopa tells us how to take inference as the path. In these DVD's Thrangu Rinpoche presents detailed teachings and commentary on Dolpopa's Mountain Doctrine.

These teachings present a path for working with emotions that is firmly grounded in the teachings of the Buddhist treatises. At the same time, the format, practice category names and practice sequence used by Rinpoche to present this material are complementary to western psychology and are easily understood by western practitioners. Rinpoche’s introductory talk outlines the view of emotions and methods for working with emotions in the three yanas. The next four talks present a powerful series of practices that encourage practitioners to identify and work with their own particular patterns of emotional reactivity. These stages of practice (mindful gap, clear seeing, letting go, and bringing emotions directly into our practice) are explained with extraordinary skill and clarity. In the concluding talk, Rinpoche relates what he has taught back to the three yanas and provides instructions on taking suffering and happiness to the path. These teachings are engaging, delightful, and highly useful in a direct and personal way.

Gustav has been planning the trip for some time--he is going to a retreat in a Buddhist monastery. But Uwe is undertaking the trip on a whim at the spur of the moment. Unexpectedly, Uwe's wife and children walked out on him, so he is going on the trip because he needs to be with his brother. On their first night in Tokyo, the brothers go out for dinner but then suffer a cascading series of disasters as they manage to lose their way, their money, their bank cards, and then, in the organized chaos of a massive Tokyo interchange, each other. Lama Yeshe Gyamtso offered the teaching on faith and insight at Karma Triyana Dharmachakra in August 2008. In showing how those two aspects of spiritual development not only do not contradict, but in fact complement each other, he used the traditional model of the four types of faith as his outline: awe, aspiration, belief, and certainty.
The content of this teaching is best described in Lama Yeshe's own words: "Many people have experienced, as beginners, almost a dichotomy or split between two aspects of what we regard, rightly or wrongly, as spiritual development. One aspect is the cultivation of faith and devotion-we think of that as the more emotional aspect of spirituality. The other aspect is the development of wisdom. As beginners we tend to think of that as more cognitive aspect-we try to learn; we try to understand.

Fire Under the Snow: A Tibetan Monk - a Spirit Unbroken by 33 Years of Torture (DVD) By: Makoto Sasa
|
Our Price: $22.00 Members Price: $19.80
|
|
|

The autobiography of Palden Gyatso, who was arrested in 1959 after taking part in a non-violent demonstration for Tibetan independence. After a failed escape bid he was starved and tortured. Following his release in 1992, after 33 years of captivity, he fled to India and began to reveal the true extent of the Chinese oppression in Tibet.
Palden Gyatso, a Buddhist monk since childhood, was arrested
by the Chinese Communist Army in 1959. He spent the next 33 years in
prison for the "crimes" of peaceful demonstration and refusal to
denounce his apolitical teacher as an Indian spy. He was tortured,
starved and sentenced to hard labor. He watched his nation and culture
destroyed, his teachers, friends and family displaced, jailed or killed
under Chinese occupation.
Fire Under the Snow reaches back to Palden's birth in 1933
and follows him through the Orwellian nightmare that began with the
Chinese invasion. We cut back and forth between the past and Palden's
present as an activist, living in exile. Our P.O.V. becomes a "third
eye" hovering over Paldens current life, haunted by his memories of the
past. We explore the escalating cycle of interrogation and physical
violation during his years in prison that ended decades later with
Palden's escape from Tibet and a cathartic meeting with His Holiness the
Dalai Lama.
The film also investigates the basis of Palden's resilience. He
claims that faith in Buddhism helped him survive the 33 years of his
imprisonment. Furthermore, he insists that he is not angry with the
Chinese. He believes these atrocities befell him due to "karma."
While imprisoned, the mere existence of the Dalai Lama was a
beacon of hope to Palden and fellow prisoners-of-conscience. They
dreamed of being released from their torment and delivered into his open
arms. Today, the Dalai Lama and his supporters advance the idea of a
"mutually beneficial" autonomy within China, an idea generated from
Buddhist philosophy. Palden Gyatso and a sizable constituency are
holding-out for total independence. Thus, a painful schism exists.
Through discussions lead by Palden, competing political agendas are
revealed within the Tibetan exile community.
At the 2006 Winter Olympics in Turin, we filmed the entirety of
Palden's participation in a hunger strike. Using this highly publicized
and symbolic event, an attempt is made to draw public attention to
Beijing's hosting of the 2008 Olympics. International Olympic Committee
Vice President Mario Pescante visits the site of the hunger strike to
negotiate a cessation of the action, and reveals the impotence of his
position. We capture Palden's dedication to the cause, his mentoring of
the younger Tibetan hunger strikers, and his emotional recollections of
lost comrades. The strike throws into harsh relief the reality that
human rights concerns are trampled under by naked economic ambitions.
Despite all, Palden Gyatso remains unbroken, keeping the flame of his spirit ablaze.
Fire Under the Snow reveals the contours of an inspirational story: the survival of a mind and a soul under unthinkable duress.

“Grant your blessings to myself and all beings that our minds may go to the Dharma.
Grant your blessings that the Dharma may become a path.
Grant your blessings that the path may clarify bewilderment.
Grant your blessings that bewilderment may arise as wisdom.”
Despite their brevity, these lines express the entirety of the Buddha’s teachings. In this masterful exposition, Khenchen Thrangu Rinpoche illuminates their meaning in a series of six talks. Beginning with the story of Lord Gampopa, the great bodhisattva who integrated the Kadampa lineage of Atisha with the mahamudra lineage of Milarepa, it continues with the motivation for turning one’s mind to Dharma, developing the correct motivations for practice, concise explanation of the methods of vajrayana practice, and finally mahamudra.

September 21, 2006 was the United Nations Day

to have a visit on that day from“a simple monk”
who is one of the leading spokesmen for peace
and understanding in our human world: His
Holiness the Dalai Lama. This DVD chronicles
both his public talk in the town of Woodstock
and an extensive Buddhist teaching and ceremony
at KTD Monastery, the sponsor of the visit.
In his public talk, His Holiness focused on two
main themes. First, he spoke of loving kindness
and compassion as basic human values, values
that are not particularly religious teachings but
rather something fundamental to everything
that we cherish in life. The second theme was
understanding among religious traditions. His
Holiness expressed his respect and appreciation
of all major traditions in today's world, and urged
us to see what is universal among them,
especially the cultivation of loving kindness and
compassion.

This experiential Song of the Dzogchen View, written by Ju Mipham with commentary by Khenpo Gangshar, starts with instructions for beginners to gain direct experience of freedom from extremes. Miphams song continues with instructions on the actual practice of Dzogchen how to see directly un-obscured self-arisen awareness. This section of the song culminates in a profound meditation instruction on realizing the unmistaken meaning of the union of awareness and emptiness. The concluding sections clearly point out both the helpful and misleading teachings found in the exposition, sutra, mind only and middle way schools as presented by masters of the Sakya, Geluk, Kagyu and Drukpa lineages. Thrangu Rinpoches extensive teachings elucidate the meaning and make this experiential song accessible to both beginning and advanced practitioners. Practice sessions as well as question and answer sessions further clarify the meaning. Ju Mipchams song, together with an outline extracted from Khenpo Gangshars commentary, is included with this DVD set. Translated by David Choepel.

In 1958, the Chinese invaded Kham in tibet, destroying monasteries and imprisoning monks. In the previous summer, Khenpo Gangshar foresaw that the difficulties Tibet was already experiencing were going to escalate. In order to help the monks progress rapidly on the path so they could meet their challenges skillfully, he gave this teaching on naturally liberating whatever you meet. Thrangu Rinppoche, Chogyam Trungpa Rinpoche and Khenpo Karthar Rinpoche received this profound cycle of teachings. Khenpo Gangshar summarizes this teaching at the outset:
“A worthy student is one who aspires to practice the profoundest of the profound and secret vajrayana - the essential oral instructions of all the anuttara yoga tantras or the nature of the realization of effortless ati. To meet the needs of such a student, these three points should be taught: The preliminary steps of mind training, the main practice of pointing-out, and the subsequent application, combining the profound advice into key points.”
The preliminary steps include the analytical meditation of the pandita. The main practice, the resting meditation of a kusulu is presented in two points: resolving and distinguishing. The profound advice includes instructions on the wisdom of emotions, taking the bardo state as the path and taking sleep as the path.
In these talks Thrangu Rinpoche provides clear and concise commentary on this amazing text. Rinpoche concludes several talks with meditation sessions. Others conclude with question-answer sessions with students.

Knowledge of Healing (DVD)
|
Our Price: $29.95 Members Price: $26.96
|
|
|

The Knowledge of Healing is an illuminating examination of Tibetan medicine, which has developed over two millennia into an amazingly successful method of healing.
Unlike Western medicine, based on biochemistry, Tibetan medical thinking (which is strongly rooted in Buddhist principles) views the human body as governed by an elaborately organized system of energies flowing through a network of channels. In the 12th century, the Gyüshi (Knowledge of Healing) was created, a text codifying this intricate system. After flourishing for centuries, most Tibetan medical schools were destroyed by the Chinese in the 1950’s and 1960’s, and many physicians were executed.
Speaking from exile, the Dalai Lama argues for the value of Tibetan medicine, while his personal physician Dr. Tenzin Choedrak describes the principles behind it. We follow physicians in India and Siberia treating patients for a variety of ailments from paralysis to heart disease, and meet researchers in Israel and Switzerland to see how clinical studies are testing the effectiveness of Tibetan medicine.

The Last Salt Caravan follows the Ancient Trade Route to Tibet's mysterious gorge with a salton spring. We follow the caravan as it is taking a salt-selling journey on the Ancient Trade Route between Tibet and China. The memory of the ancient trade route was regarded as something that had fallen into oblivion until we met the last salt caravan in the deep mountains of Tibet. The Province of Yunnan, located in the south western part of China, is the very starting point of the Ancient Tea Trade Route toward Tibet, which was also called a southern Silk Road with a two thousand year history. Caravans from Yanijing and Yunnan still take this route to trade tea grains and most importantly, salt. Throughout the history, slat had been the source of power and taxation. This region and the salt caravan have never been introduced to the outside world and therefore, their local characteristics and culture are untouched by modern civilization.
